Local PSA worker still angry after being retrenched a decade ago

....

Invariably, the process is used to get rid of the deadwood and the non performers. Nationality, race, religion are not part of the equation. As long as a manager considers a worker to be an asset, he'll do all he can to protect his job....
.
Though retrenchment is an ideal process to clear deadwood and keep assets, in reality, it seldom happened this way. During retrenchment, it is common to find porlumpar surviving the process. Straight people who had stepped the toes of supervisors unknowing were among the first to go even though they are actually the better workers. Ang mo bosses like pinoy or m&d while ah neh will protect their own kind - that is what I have observed so far.

You can't change human nature. There will always be insecure and biased managers in any organisation.

If managers don't run their shows in an objective an impartial manner, injustices occur daily and not just when retrenchments are carried out.

That's because I was low level myself and while I was deciding who should get the chop, I was fully aware that the same thing might be happening to me once I had done my part of culling process.

You learn to take nothing for granted and the uncertainty spurred me on the get to a point in my life where my destiny was no longer in the hands of others.

Agreed on that. Being in firm control of one's destiny is an ideal we should all work on. Life is like that, there's a lot of trade-offs.

An employee has no control over his own fate, even the CEO can get the sack due to the firm being bought over, even the Chairman of Board or founder of the company can get disposed by other members. But there is certainty in the short to mid term that I will take home a certain amount of pay, and stay pretty comfortable.

An entrepreneur can have as much control over his fate as he wants. But with the power, there's tonnes of responsibility. For example to set up my own hedge fund, I got to come up with my own risk capital, and maybe pool in some more from my own contacts. The I have to be responsible for every aspect of the business to keep it afloat.

But like many in our line, I aspire to run my own hedge funds, simply because there's freedom to exploit opportunities that arises , but due to regulations, red tapes, compliance issues or even politics, it's not possible to do so. In short I get to write my own rules.

seems like some of my friends, who are working in banks and never retrenched before, are actually looking for opportunities elsewhere. seems like life is too good for them. i may sound sour grapes but once they have been thru a single retrenchment, they will know how it feels. and we are not young anymore, slight near 40. they still have house and car mortgage, with kids to feed. i really don't know what some people are thinking. my 2 cents.

I have experienced that too, but the goal is to be better paid the next job & better prepared too, without having to rely on you know who, who you know will not help but only to your wallet. The ultimate goal is to be your own boss, easy to say, but sadly, that should be the path, for we have to look after ourselves & the other sad thing is, we have people we pay good money to, sell us out.

Last time there was only Malaysian technicians in PSA, now they have Myanmar technicians. I believe there will be Pinoy and Indian technician in future.

Many probably know that their time is running out & might be looking for higher pay.

We need another round of global economic downturn to jolt us out of our complacency, I am sure our government is not prepared for another round & this time, it will be the worse we can have ever seen. It is best prepare for it today, by having assets that one can liquidate the quickest!!

The civil service is BLOATED, many in the civil service thinks that, they have a titanium rice bowl jobs, least the forget, that in the past, there were massive retrenchment in the civil service...a major 'tsunami' is in the making..it is like an over inflated ZEPPLIN, danger signs are showing...

Fortunately even the "Leader" is going to re-join his wife somewhere down below. No one is immune to mortality
