The wife of Workers’ Party (WP) Member of Parliament for Hougang Mr Yaw Shin Leong has slammed the local media for sensationalizing rumours to generate readership, supposedly in defense of her husband who was alleged to be involved in an extra-marital affair with a married female member from the same party.
On the same day that several local media carried articles on her husband’s alleged extra-marital affair, Wang Lin, the wife of Mr Yaw posted a comment on her Facebook on Thursday morning, saying:
Following TR Emeritus (TRE) report on 20th Jan on the alleged extra-marital affair of a certain Mr Yaw from a prominent opposition party [Link], the local media went about their own due diligence and identified Mr Yaw Shin Leong as the person alleged to be involved.
When approached by The New Paper (TNP), Mr Yaw said “I do not wish to comment on rumours” but would not explain why he did not outright deny it - if it was not the case. Wang Lin, who was with him also declined comment but subsequently posted the above captioned comment on her Facebook.
The same paper also contacted the woman Mr Yaw allegedly had an affair with but the woman would not deny nor confirm it, saying: “I hope you will not identify me or the other woman involved.”
Mr Yaw was reportedly involved with several women before and was warned by the party’s Central Executive Council (CEC).
Apparently, WP CEC is aware of the allegations, but so far everyone is keeping mum and avoiding the media. Yahoo! News reportedly was unable to get a response from anyone from the party.
In an earlier email reply to TRE’s queries, the Deputy Treasurer of the party, Mr Png Eng Huat said: “We have to think carefully about our response”. The same email dated 20th Jan, was copied to Mr Low Thia Khiang, Ms Sylvia Lim and several others in the party.
Since the alleged affair was widely reported by Yahoo! News, Sin Ming Daily and The New Paper, Mr Yaw’s Facebook page has been bombarded with comments from followers, calling him to face the issue and apologise instead of deleting the offending comments.

What’s the role of a journalist/editor? To sensationalise so as to create readership? Putting together piecemeal comments taken out of context such that it creates a picture of ‘reality’? Gutter journalism out on a prowl to create maximum damages. May God bless them.
