As you guys know since sg is so small it doesn't have a capital unlike most other countries in the world. In some countries ppl that were not born in the country's capital all strive or move to live and work in the country's capital. Countries like this are thailand. I have a few thai frens and all of them reside in bangkok but they were born in various parts of thailand. For the US it's not like this. There are quite a substantial number of ppl that live in the backwoods or don't live in the mega cities like new york or LA for eg cos USA is so huge. I suppose it's the same for china. I don't think you'll see large numbers of chinese ppl living in beijing even though i'm sure many chinese from all over china reside in beijing. What about other countries? I know a few japanese frens too and not all of them reside in tokyo. In fact it seems that only my thai frens and the ppl i know from thailand have either resided in bkk or are currently staying in some apartment in bkk. Any other country just like thailand where for some reason ppl from all over the country just want to reside in the capital.

Jah, just take a look up north to M'sia. Many people move to and work in KL but were born in Penang, Kota Baru, Segamat, etc.

In many countries in the developing world, folk would flock to the cities where they might find more "progressive" work. US is different because the development is more widespread and the large cities that have sprouted throughout the country have enough "pull power" to attract company headquarters and/or other commercial activities to locate there. In Indonesia, I was told that a couple of thousand people go to Jakarta everyday in search of better paying jobs that what the countryside can offer.

Cheers!

its the same in the philippines. Many from the provinces head for Manila looking for scarce jobs.

thanks for the feedback guys.

I suppose only china and the US you wouldn't find ppl all trying to move to the capital.

i think the country people in China try to move to the capital except for the Shanghainese as bro Unrepented said. Beijing as Shanghai are rival cities.

Come to think of it i can only think of 2 places in china that sound pretty high class. Shanghai and beijing. Now in the US New york and LA or the cities in california are probably unrivalled elsewhere in the US but still you don't hear of ppl in the US all moving there.

they dont all want to head for NY or LA / San Fran because the other cities are almost as good.....eg Houston...chicago...new orleans....seattle.

Perhaps some people in the more boring midwest or around the mountains do head for city life.

Many places in the US are lively enough for people to want to stay put as long as they can find jobs.

The same cant be said for rural China or even Russia.

Yes the US has many interesting areas not just LA or NY but why is this so? Why isn't it the case for other countries?

i think thats because the US is more evenly developed as a country. England is the same. There will be some decay here and there in some localised areas as some industries

die due to natural causes or outsourcing but on the whole the countries are still in quite good shape

The other countries eg China ....India do not as yet have the resources to develop every city....China is trying hard though.

Once they succeed then they will automatically decentralise and become like the US.

Washington DC as US capital is one of the smaller cities in US. Another surprisingly small city is San Francisco. It's SF Bay Area that's big, not SF city. There's a history in this. SF was quite an old high nosed snob city and the metropolitan towns (collectively known as Bay Area) refused to join in the incorporation of city. US biggest incorporated cities are NY, LA, Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia and Boston. Even Seattle or Portland, Houston or Atlanta are bigger than SF or DC.

The only reason why people lived near capital cities because you can find jobs easily.

Never lived inside the cities itself because its sleazy and dirty.

Find a nice surburb and enjoy more space and sanity.
