Babel fined for Twitter outburst on Webb

Liverpool forward fined £10,000 for posting comments and a doctored picture of referee Howard Webb on Twitter.

How Ryan Babel landed himself in 'Twitterjail'

Ryan Babel, perhaps football's proliic most tweeter, has been unusually quiet since being sent to 'Twitterjail' on Jan 9.

Too far? the Liverpool winger had already dismissed Webb's performance at Old Trafford as a joke

Going dark: Babel has not tweeted since Jan 9, when he listed his location as TwitterJail

....which was picked up by his Twitter followers

The Holland international used his Twitter account to post a mocked-up picture of Webb wearing a United shirt, after the World Cup official awarded the home side a first-minute penalty and sent off Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

Babel soon realised the seriousness of his actions and apologised to Webb. But that was not enough to placate the Football Association, who have today fined the Holland international £10,000 and warned him over his future conduct.

During the FA's brief investigation, Babel jokingly described his location as "Twitterjail" and asked his followers if they would visit him once he was "handcuffed."

A campaign #FreeRyanBabel was launched, apparently by Babel himself, but it remains to be seen whether the player will use their blogging service again.

It is not the first time Babel, has courted controversy on Twitter, nor is he the only Liverpool player to push the boundaries.

Last January, Babel criticised former Reds manager Rafael Benitez on the social networking site, and he is not the first Liverpool player to court online controversy this weekend.

Glen Johnson attacked TV pundit Paul Merson after he criticised his performance, tweeting: "Comments from alcoholic drug abusers are not really gonna upset me and who is Paul Merson to judge players, he was average at the best of times. The only reason he's on that show is coz he gambled all his money away. The clown!"

Premier League: Wolves 0 Liverpool 3

22 January 2011

Raul Meireles put in an inspired display as Liverpool ran out 3-0 winners over Wolves at Molineux on Saturday.

Meireles supplied Fernando Torres with the first of his two goals before killing off a spirited Wolves team with a brilliant shot of his own early in the second period to seal Liverpool's first win since Kenny Dalglish's return to the club.

While Wolves can feel aggrieved at a score line that flattered the visitors, there is no doubt that Liverpool earned their win courtesy of ruthless finishing.

With Steven Gerrard serving a one match ban, Meireles reveled as the main source of the Reds' creativity and his 35 yard half volley just past the half hour gave Wayne Hennessey another cause for concern, with the Welsh international diving on to a Maxi Rodriguez effort moments later.

With the hosts labouring in vein, Liverpool edged ahead with a routine 36th minute break that again exposed Wolves' defensive naivety.

Ronald Zubar's failure to step up with his fellow defenders and enforce the offside trap allowed Christian Poulsen to find Meireles along the right channel who in turn fed Torres in the centre for the simplest of close-range finishes.

Lively Wolves were guilty of missing a similar chance seconds before the break when a loose ball fell at the feet of Nenad Milijas whose poor control allowed Pepe Reina precious time to dive and save at the Serbian's feet.

Meireles turned from goal supplier to scorer with a wondrous 50th minute volley that deserved to settle any game. Daniel Agger's deep centre was headed clear by the Wolves back line and fell to the Portuguese play maker who hit a dipping first time shot over Hennessey from 25 yards.

Wolves rallied somewhat but despite seeing Reina spill Stephen Fletcher's swerving volley and debutant Adam Hammill waste a close range chance, Torres sealed the points for the visitors when he tucked away his second in injury time to seal the points.

hopefully this revival will last till the end of season.
two wins in a row.

Liverpool beat Fulham 1-0 in scrappy Anfield win

LONDON, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Liverpool clinched a gritty 1-0 victory over Fulham on Wednesday to hand Kenny Dalglish his first home win since returning to Anfield for his second spell as manager.

It took a scrappy 52nd minute own goal from John Pantsil, who sliced the ball into his own net after Fernando Torres shot deflected off the post, to secure the three points and Liverpool's second consecutive Premier League win after the weekend victory over lowly Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The win lifted Liverpool to seventh in the standings with 32 points. "We will take anything as any club will do," manager Dalglish told Sky Sports. "At times we played good football and deserved the bounce of the ball.

"I have seen three games and that is one of the few games we have had a little bit of good fortune." Liverpool could have taken an early lead when a rejuvenated Torres latched onto a pass from Raul Meireles and poked it into the net only to be pulled back by the linesman's flag.

While Fulham keeper David Stockdale made fine saves to deny Meireles from eight yards and a long-range effort from Glen Johnson in a first half largely dominated by the Reds. But after taking the lead, Dalglish's side failed to press home their advantage and allowed the visitors to maintain a foothold in the game.

Fulham pressed hard in the closing minutes and should have levelled when Moussa Dembele saw a shot from eight yards scrambled away by Reds keeper Pepe Reina. "I think Fulham might feel a bit of injustice and feel they should have got something from the game," Dalglish added.

"I think in the first half we had six good chances and one chalked off that was really onside. "But the lads put in a great effort and threw their bodies on the line because they didn't want to lose a goal and they have worked hard all season."

Liverpool reject Chelsea´s Torres bid

28 January 2011

Chelsea's desperate attempt to bring star striker Fernando Torres to Stamford Bridge has been knocked back by Liverpool.

Reports say owner Roman Abramovich was set to part with up to 40 million pounds to secure the services of the Spaniard, but despite their own financial woes, the Reds were not willing to budge on arguably their greatest asset in the quest to rebuild their season.

Liverpool's owners New England Sports Ventures confirmed via a spokesman that the 26-year-old was not on the market, with fans on Merseyside breathing a collective sigh of relief.

"Chelsea have made a bid for Fernando which has been turned down. The player is not for sale," the spokesman was quoted as saying by England daily The Times.

Torres reportedly has a clause in his contract that enables him to be released for transfer, should the club be offered a minimum of 50 million pounds.

Liverpool have agreed a deal worth up to €26.5 million (£22.8 million) to sign Luis Suarez from Ajax.

Liverpool have been in negotiations with Ajax for some time and, with the last offer said to have been worth just half of Ajax's desired €30 million, it was believed the talks may have reached an impasse.

Ajax had set a deadline of Saturday for the deal to be concluded and coach Frank de Boer said he believed the deal had a "50-50 chance" of going through, but the move is now expected to be completed over the weekend.

A statement on the official Ajax website read: "Ajax and Liverpool have reached an agreement over the transfer of Luis Suarez. He will make the move to the English club immediately. The deal is worth up to a total of €26.5 million."

Liverpool will now seek to agree personal terms with Suarez, 24, and the player will undergo a medical.

A Liverpool statement added: "Liverpool Football Club announced this afternoon that they had agreed a fee of up to €26.5 million with Ajax for the transfer of Luis Suarez, subject to the completion of a medical.

"The club have now been given permission by Ajax to discuss personal terms with the player and his representatives."

Carroll looks a good buy for me - think Liverpool tan dio...big n strong...some more young - good future for England.

Torres, good on his feet, nimble but look frail. And injury prone.

If liverpool can bed him down, they will do good. Now, please go strengthen that midfield - you need someone to partner Gerrard.

Torres delighted with Chelsea move

1 February 2011

New Chelsea signing Fernando Torres says he is delighted with his move to Stamford Bridge and is eyeing a long career at the London club.

The former Liverpool striker signed a five-and-half-year deal reportedly worth 50 million pounds as Chelsea look to bolster their striking stocks ahead of the knockout stages of the Champions League and the conclusion of the English Premier League campaign.

The 26-year-old said he is looking forward to making an immediate impression at his new club, who face off against Liverpool in the league at Stamford Bridge this Sunday. "I am very happy with my transfer to Chelsea and I am looking forward very much to helping my new team-mates this season and for many years to come," he told the Chelsea website.

"Having played against Chelsea many times since coming to England, and in some very big games I will never forget, I know there are many great players here and I will work hard to win a place in the team. I hope I can score some important goals for the supporters to enjoy this season."

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck hailed the signing of one of the world's best players as a major coup for his club. "This is a very significant day for Chelsea, capturing one of the best players in the world with his peak years ahead of him," Buck said.

"We have long admired the talents of a player who is a proven goalscorer in English football and Fernando's arrival is a sign of our continuing high ambitious. I hope every Chelsea fan is as excited as I am with this news."

Torres, who joined Liverpool from Atletico Madrid in 2007, scored 81 goals in 142 total appearances for the Reds including both goals when the Reds defeated Chelsea at Anfield in November.

Liverpool seal Suarez signing

1 February 2011

12427212100.jpg

Liverpool have finalised the signing of Uruguay striker Luis Suarez from Dutch giants Ajax for a fee of 26.5 million Euros.

The two clubs agreed a fee on Friday for the 24-year-old forward but the transfer was not completed until Monday, after the player passed a medical and was granted a work permit.

Suarez has signed a five-and-a-half-year deal with the Merseyside club.

"The club agreed a fee of up to 26.5 million Euros with Ajax for the transfer of the Uruguayan international on Friday," a Liverpool statement read.

"The deal was subject to the completion of a medical, which the player has now passed.

Luis Suarez will wear the No.7 shirt for Liverpool."

After signing from Groningen in 2007, Suarez scored an incredible 81 goals in 110 Eredivisie appearances for Ajax.

He scored 49 goals in all competitions for Ajax in the 2009-10 season before starring for his country at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where he netted three goals in six matches.

They bought a 'thug' for 35 million pounds. I can hardly call that a good deal. Well ,at least he will keep Gerard company the next time they go 'clubbing'.

The only person smiling from ear to ear has got to be Mike Ashley. He did a darn good piece of business with Pool-35 million pounds???? That's outrageous!!!

Liverpool complete Carroll swoop

1 February 2011

12427212130.jpg

Liverpool have completed the record signing of Andy Carroll, with the striker joining from Newcastle on transfer deadline day.

The 35-million-pound transfer makes Carroll the most expensive British player in history, surpassing the 30.3-million-pound fee Manchester United paid to Leeds United for Rio Ferdinand in 2002.

Carroll, 22, was targeted by the Merseysiders as a replacement for Fernando Torres, who joined Chelsea for a reported fee of 50 million pounds on Monday.

"Andy Carroll has tonight completed his transfer from Newcastle United to Liverpool FC and signed a five-and-a-half-year deal that will keep him at Anfield until 2016," a Liverpool statement read.

"The club agreed a record transfer fee with Newcastle earlier in the day for the transfer of the England international striker.

The deal was subject to the completion of a medical, which the player has now passed. Andy Carroll will wear the No. 9 shirt for Liverpool."

Torres will partner fellow new signing Luis Suarez in Liverpool's attack, with the Uruguayan completing his 22.8-million-pound transfer on Monday.

Carroll's transfer fee is the eighth highest of all time and will place large pressure on the England international to be a consistent supplier of goals for Kenny Dalglish's side.

The striker has enjoyed a successful start to the 2010-11 Premier League season, netting 11 goals in 19 appearances.

Carroll could make his Liverpool debut when his new side host Stoke City at Anfield on Wednesday.

I am happy for Pool and even happier for Le Blue. The latter will find out the true colors of Torres.

did liverpool just lost their best player? and take in a trainee at 35 millions???
what is the story?

Torres Specials Debut Specials: Hat-trick on Debut 33/1
Fernando Torres would have no qualms scoring against Liverpool if he makes his Chelsea debut in Sunday's Barclays Premier League clash against the Reds at Stamford Bridge.

By sheer coincidence, this weekend's game could be Torres' first for his new club following his record-breaking £50million move from Anfield last night.

The 26-year-old has not asked to be left out to avoid risking the wrath of his former club's fans, some of whom burned replica shirts bearing his name shortly before his switch to west London was sealed last night.

"It is like destiny," Torres said of the prospect of playing on Sunday.

"It is not perfect for me but we will see what happens and I only have good words about Liverpool. They made me a top player and gave me the chance to play at the top level.

"I will never say anything bad about Liverpool. I have been very happy there, but now the history is different and I am playing for Chelsea.

"If I have the chance to play, I will do my best for Chelsea and hopefully I can score."................................www.football365.com

........................................................................................................

Will surely make Pool fans boil if he plays and scores. My best bet is Stevie G will be next to follow Torres out of Anfield.

Premier League: Liverpool 2 Stoke 0

3 February 2011

12427212750.jpg

Liverpool's new signing Luis Suarez marked his debut with a goal as the Reds beat a well-organised Stoke side 2-0 at Anfield.

Raul Meireles opened the scoring before the Uruguayan came off the bench to seal all three points for Kenny Dalglish's side, making it three wins from as many games for the Merseysiders.

The home crowd thought they had taken the lead within the first ten minutes after Reds defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos's glancing header from a corner looked to be heading in, however Salif Diao was on hand to hook the ball off the line.

Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic pulled off a wonder save moments later to keep the visitors on level terms as he clawed Glen Johnson's header to safety from Martin Kelly's cross. But while there was plenty of pressure applied on the Stoke goal, a combination of poor finishing and the inspired form of Begovic kept the visitors in the game as the first half came to a close.

Liverpool's persistence paid off as soon as the second half kicked off. Steven Gerrard's deflected shot caused panic in the Stoke area as their backline failed to clear the ball, and midfielder Meireles made the most of the scramble by slamming the ball into the net from 12 yards for his second goal in three Premier League games.

The goal seemed to spring Stoke into life, and they almost drew level after John Carew's shot flew inches wide of Pepe Reina's upright. Liverpool were looking to kill the game off, and with Andy Carroll's thigh injury preventing him from making his debut, it was left to Suarez, Dalglish's other new multi-million pound signing, to make his bow.

The forward, signed last week from Ajax for 23 million pounds, was greeted by rapturous applause as he made his way onto the pitch after 63 minutes in place of Fabio Aurelio, and marked his debut with a goal. It took only sixteen minutes for the striker to make his mark, calmly rounding Begovic and slotting home after a neat through ball by Dirk Kuyt.

Jon Walters's snap-shot was well saved by Reina in the dying moments as Stoke looked for a consolation, but Liverpool's resurgence continued with a well-deserved win.
