Big banks in Europe and the US announced almost 100,000 new job cuts this year, and thousands more are expected from BNP Paribas and Barclays early next year, as the wave of lay-offs that began in 2007 shows no sign of abating.
The 2015 cuts — which exclude the impact of major asset sales — amount to more than 10 per cent of the total workforce across the 11 large European and US banks that announced fresh lay-offs, according to analysis by the Financial Times.
The most recent came last week, as workers at Dutch lender Rabobank learnt of 9,000 cuts across their bank the day after Morgan Stanley announced 1,200 lay-offs, including at its ailing fixed income division.
Barclays and BNP Paribas, two of Europe’s biggest banks, will unveil job cuts when they announce strategies that are designed to strip out 10 to 20 per cent of the costs at their investment banks, people familiar with the situations said.

If you realise they are mostly european banks....what does that tell you

our local banks seem strong and no retrenchment news, i am proud to be a sinkie!

That is good news. More sinkies can make way for real global talents to join our homegrown financial institutions.

if i am new graduate, i will join a tech start-up instead of banking industry, look at google, facebook and alibaba. all are great companies of the century.

It shows that Europe is now going through a rough financial patch. First it was the US. Now that the US is recovering, it is the turn of the Europeans.

Won't be surprise if more European FT will be heading to Asia. It will mean that Sporeans are going to find it tough to get jobs into the banking sector

Our banks are small & limited. They can thrive in Spore because of protectionism. Just ask people who have used DBS, OCBC, ... & we all have our own stories of how terrible they are:o

In the past LKY predicted the threat from banks like Citibank. He was correct to be concerned. I have had accounts with many banks in Spore, including Citi & today I only bank with Citi.

No problem sir. Once they are part of Team Singapore, we will become better than ever! How do good schools improve their ranking? By taking in good students of course. How to win more SEA games medals? By giving good atheletes citizenships lah. Simplicity itself.
