Life will get tougher but S'poreans confident Govt can handle crisis

BY RACHEL CHAN

SINGAPOREANS are bracing themselves for tougher times ahead, but most trust the Government to help the nation weather the storm.

This is part of the results of a survey conducted by Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) Research, Analysis and Planning Department.

The inaugural SPH Web-Panel Poll saw 69 per cent of 487 respondents expressing full trust in the Government's ability to tackle the financial crisis and protect Singaporeans' interests.

Echoing this sentiment are youth worker Shawn Wong, 30, and student-learning centre manager Joyce Lee, 29. Both say the Government's reliability is evident from its track record.

'The Government has been spending prudently over the years, proving that we can tide over any downturn. We sailed through 2001, so this time shouldn't be any different,' said Mr Wong, who earns about $3,000 a month.

While 81 per cent of respondents say that times will be more difficult, they remain upbeat.

About 75 per cent of those polled are confident that Singapore will ride out the storm within three years, with more than half of these expecting the financial crisis to blow over in one to two years.

Ms Lee, for example, said she has suffered paper losses from her property and share investments, but won't be tightening her belt as 'Singapore is not as badly affected as the United States'.

She added: 'The Government is responsive and taking necessary actions to rectify matters immediately. This can be seen, for example, in the Government's treatment of the minibonds investors.'

===================================

We are definately heading for early elections. PAP knows the mentality of the voters, and is confident of a repeat of the 2001 elections where there was a landslide victory during the elections.

Dear Bart,

Once again we see the SPH's hand as the mouthpiece and propaganda machine of the PAP.

Given their track record of false reporting, I assume fictitious respondents Shawn Wong, 30, talks about the recession in '01 when it is quite obvious he knows nuts of it since he was probably still doing his NS or was in uni then.

What does he know of the struggles of businessmen, salaried workers and retirees?

What did they do? They squirreled away money to tide them over. They know that the govt is all lipservice and no concrete help will be forthcoming.

Reccessionary cycles are now a lot more shorter than they used to be, in the past short recessions were expected every decade or more, now it seems like it will happen every 8 years and they tend to be prolonged ones.

Joyce Lee too is "quoted" when clearly she, just like Shawn Wong, has not been through a recession, whatmore a recession of this magnitude. Even if they are real people given their ages this is evidence enough that the SPH is liberally shovelling out bovine excrement and priting it.

Next, the phrase "tough times" is used, whatever happened to Swiss Standards?

Didn't the very same news organisation declare this in big bold headlines some years ago?

Now they have conducted opinion polls, stating that 69%, no longer 66%, believe this craterously greedy government will help them while 81% actually know it's a "you die your own business" policy and they'll try to survive on their own.

What is even more scary is that some years ago, LKY, LHL, GCT and the lot have said that opinion polls mean nothing to them. They govern not by popularity.

Now SPH comes, like the proverbial knight, to give some semblance that the opinions of people are important and there is an active democracy in Sg.

Clearly, this propagandisers truly realise the threat and with how things went in the recent U.S. elections with opinion polls acting as a real barometer, unlike in the past, as to the way people actually voted.

SPH had to come up with something since clearly polls on the govt is never carried out and the disconcerting absence of them is getting rather vacuous.

And when such polls are indeed done, they must show that the people support the govt in their hikes and in their signing themselves of better paycheques.

Many Sgeans were in fact rooting for the current president-elect and also saw the need for change, and "change" is the new catch word to remove govts that have been in power for far too long.

M'sia did it as did Thailand albeit rather messily.

This song and dance routine by the SPH is nothing but mere cosmetology, in trying once again to show that Sg is a democracy, when the converse is true.
You can only paint a facade so many times before the thick coats of paint starts peeling off and hangs there like ugly scabs on a festering wound.

Journalistic standards, integrity, ethics and truth are not ideals the SPH strives towards since these ideals, which by the way are journalistic essentials, must give way to "nation building" as so clearly stated by the SPH.

Finally, if one were to read and believe anything that the SPH publishes then sadly one is really nothing but a moron deserving of the govt they choose.

Cheers,

They take from us by the millions on a daily basis, and return us in form of peanuts on a quarterly basis. To them, because there's the act of giving back to us, it's considered a big thing, and people should be grateful for it.

i wouldnt accuse SPH of publishing biased survey results because, come on, how many people want to be published in the papers expressing no confidence in the government?

its easy to criticise the government on the internet, but how many dare to do it in person?

I might still trust the survey conducted by world 1st 10 paper. But asking me to believe in our 154th ST statistic, I might not be able to digest. Besides, who owned the least freedom of speech ST? PAP. It is like your neighbour son telling you that his father is a trustworthy man though this neighbour of yours was not popular in the whole town. By the way, if you don't believe in the son, his father will sue you bankrupt which is well known in the neighbourhood.
