That is a simplistic way of calculating life expectancy. Nowadays, you can plug in variables to calculate life expectancies at each age group. This is how the insurance companies perform their calculations. So it is correct that the 82 years life expectancy refer to the life expectancy for an infant born today, not for someone born many years ago.
