[Libraries] Evidence of the Stupidity disease many Singaporeans suffer from.
Are libraries the new museums or motels of Singapore?
Nobody in Singapore likes to use his brain,
Just like to putting up pretense, appearance of many libraries with many books, but most times, wanted books are not on the correct shelves or just mia-shelved...
Libarians and library shelving workers seem so damn preoccupied with having books look neat and tidy (even though they are not correctly arranged according to call number), they even carry around an alignment device (as part of their uniform) to make sure that the place looks like a museum and not a library. Some are even irritated if u disrupt their book alignment duties to search for a title that has been misplaced.
My guess is that the HQ Librarians are equally anal, illiterate and stupid and score(rank) branch libraries according to how neatly books appear arranged based upon CCTV camera inspections, even if arrangement by book call number is a total disaster.
Maybe the library goers are just mostly either students studying their own textbooks or retirees seeking free air con and a chance to snooze of such that being able to locate reference books is the least of their concern and feedback on the library quality based upon how physically well aligned the books are.
My guess is that the way Singapore libraries are currently run, is really good money down the drain.
National libraries ought to get their priorities right, the ability to locate random books and the accuracy of call number shelvings ought to be the proper KPI, not the alignment of books to the edge of every shelf.
Otherwise, the only benifit of libraries might just be shelter from the rain or another coffee joint with free library themed decor.
NSEW, all libraries from Jurong West, Woodlands to Sengkang, library workers in Singapore carry this stupidly ubiquitous yellow book alignment device.... and most of these guys are so preoccupied with book alignment, they are upset that u might remove a book and upset their arrangement of book spines to the edge of the shelf, let alone be interrupted to help u locate what u want. Many are probably shocked that some library users want books to be arranged by call number rather than by size or type of cover (hard vs soft).
The only reason might be that these are illiterate people who need exercise and want an air-con job, then again, maybe even the senior librarians may need to be sacked and the whole lot return to school where private research is emphasized before being allowed to return to library based jobs, or else, maybe they should all be transferred to work as gallery minders of expensive paintings at the national gallery, minding people who poke their noses too close to displayed paintings or cross the 'do not step beyond' black lines.
