<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->We thank Mr M. Linggeswar Rao for his letter, 'New library has improved, but not the noise level', last Sunday.
We are heartened and encouraged to note the writer's appreciation for a bigger and better Choa Chu Kang Public Library, as well as its newer and wider range of books.
The relocation of the library to a larger site is part of the National Library Board's continuous efforts to serve our users and communities better.
Since its reopening, the library has attracted more than 9,000 visitors a day, which is double the projected visitorship.
Given the high visitorship, we have put in place more manpower support. Our staff do make their rounds in the library every hour to advise users on appropriate library etiquette.
We have also displayed notices to remind users to maintain a quiet environment and switch their mobile phones to silent mode.
When the library gets very noisy, announcements through the PA system will also be played as a reminder.
A separate room called The Talk Zone, a prototype, was also introduced for users to answer any urgent phone calls without disturbing others.
These measures have been made to contain the noise level.
We agree with the writer that library users need to play a part in keeping the noise level in check.
As public libraries are communal learning spaces, it is important for users to be considerate towards one another at all times. We encourage all library users to practise good library etiquette, so as to contribute to a more positive library-going experience for all. Veronica Boudville (Ms)
