LKY is no longer around so thats moot. So we get rid of LHL and who would replace him? Who do you think will command the respect you think others should accord us?
Singapore is so small in terms of GDP, population size, land area, etc. as compared even to our SE Asian neighbours. Who are we to demand respect for others when we do not even have natural resources, everything is imported, including its manpower?
Don't just believe some twit who said several times that Singapore is punching above its weight? Punching what? air ahhhh? One big punch from just one of our neighbours and we will be down.
The hard truth is that we have use for others only from its central location in the past as a middleman to facilitate trade. Now that the world has grown so much smaller due to technological advances and the fact that even other poor countries are catching up in terms of competition, talents, technology, what then is our advantage? The majority of public revenue is still derived from direct and indirect taxing of local companies, its residents and the foreign trashes within its borders - COE, ERP, high rentals for GLCs with rentable properties, GST, sky high public housing prices resulting in the creation of the world's biggest profitable landlord, high licence prices, most expensive cars in the world, etc, etc, etc.
Singapore best to remain quiet and not to embarrass itself with wrong and imbecile speeches by you know who, trying to teach others and the rest of the world how to run their lives and what is good or proper governance.
This is not a put down of one's own country, but the fact is that one has to live with the truth and not be fooled by nice wayang speeches that everything in Singapore is well and good and we still have many more wonderful years to go....... What is needed is for some one with the vision and ability to lead our nation towards a different, more equitable, more accountable way of doing things. Things will improve from there. What we have at the moment just don't work.
