JOHOR BARU: A 29-year-old unemployed man who tried to blackmail a woman by threatening to post lewd pictures of her on the Internet has been arrested by police. The woman's woes began on April 9 when her handphone was stolen during a break-in at her home in Permas Jaya on April 9, Johor Baru (south) police chief Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaakob said.
"We believe the robber then sold the phone to the man who proceeded to blackmail the victim by threatening to expose her private pictures which were stored in the phone," he said in a press conference yesterday. ACP Zainuddin said the man tried to extort RM10,000 (S$4,304) from the 30-year-old woman.
"He also sent a few pictures to the victim's sister to prove he was serious about posting the images," he said. However, ACP Zainuddin said police managed to nab the culprit after they conducted a raid at a DVD store in Permas Jaya. "Two men held during the raid gave us information on the blackmailer."
Follow-up raids led to the arrest of the man, he said, adding that police then seized the mobile phone which contained lewd pictures of the victim. He said the police also seized 150 pirated VCD and DVD copies during the raid in Permas Jaya. "About 50 of the seized VCDs and DVDs were also pornographic in nature," he added.
