Leviticus 11:3-6

3 You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud.
4 “‘There are some that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, but you must not eat them. The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you. 5 The hyrax, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. 6 The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.

Deuteronomy 14:8

And don't eat pork, since pigs have divided hoofs, but they do not chew their cud. Don't even touch a dead pig!

Why Do Christians Eat Pork?

By JB Cachila, Christian Post Contributor

The consumption of pork has been an issue of contention for some because of the Old Testament command in the Bible, and it gives rise to the question of why Christians eat pork while other people of faith don't.

So are Christians allowed to eat pork? And does God approve of eating pork?

Let's take a quick look at where Christians should stand regarding the consumption of pork.

Historical prohibition

God, in the Old Testament, gave a detailed list of things the Jews were allowed and not allowed to do. The list included certain food prohibitions, and one of the food items considered banned from consumption is – you guessed it – the meat in question, pork.

"And the pig, because it parts the hoof and is cloven-footed but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. You shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you." (Leviticus 11:7-8)

Some consider eating pork as an abomination to God. After all, He did express His anger on those "Who eat swine's flesh, and the broth of unclean meat is in their pots" (see Isaiah 65:4).

God certainly showed in the Old Testament that He didn't want His people to eat pork, which is popularly found in many food items today. So does that mean Christians aren't allowed to eat pork?

Breaking the mold

The Bible tells us that Christ, the Son of God, is the Word made flesh (see John 1:14). He came to do nothing but the will of the Father (see John 4:34, 6:38). He did not come to abolish the Law God gave in the Old Testament, but rather He came to fulfill it (see Matthew 5:17). He had no sin in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21), and thus did not break God's commandments.

Did Christ prohibit the consumption of food?

"He said to them, "Are you so without understanding also? Do you not know that anything from the outside that enters a man cannot defile him, because it does not enter his heart, but into his stomach, and goes out into the sewer, thus purifying all foods?" And He said, "What comes out of a man is what defiles a man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adultery, fornication, murder, theft, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride and foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man."" (see Mark 7:18-23)

What about Jesus' disciple Peter's vision?

"In the sheet were all sorts of animals, reptiles, and birds. Then a voice said to him, "Get up, Peter; kill and eat them." "No, Lord," Peter declared. "I have never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared impure and unclean." But the voice spoke again: "Do not call something unclean if God has made it clean." The same vision was repeated three times. Then the sheet was suddenly pulled up to heaven." (see Acts 10:12-16)

What about Paul, the man who told believers to imitate him as he imitated Christ (see 1 Corinthians 11:1)? What did he say about the consumption of pork?

"Now the Spirit clearly says that in the last times some will depart from the faith and pay attention to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils ... commanding to abstain from foods, which God has created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and not to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer." (see 1 Timothy 4:1-5)

Living free

Under the Old Covenant, God sure became angry with His people for eating pork. This is not simply because of the pork, but rather because they kept disobeying His commands. It wasn't simply about the pork; it was about the condition of their hearts.
That is the very same thing Christ addressed in the passage above. Christians can eat pork because they know Christ has saved them and freed them from the curse of the Law (Galatians 3:13). Christians can eat pork because Christ said it is not unclean. Christians can eat pork because all that God created is good and is to be received with thanksgiving.

Of course, Christians know their bodies are the temples of God's Holy Spirit, and so they should take good care of them and avoid unhealthy food (see 1 Corinthians 6:19-20). For health reasons, some Christians are discouraged from eating pork, but not for doctrinal reasons. Christians can eat pork because of the freedom Christ has purchased for them.

Why is pork forbidden in Islam?

alqalam.addu.edu.ph

Do you know that a poster about symbolism of Filipino identity are being sold in local and national bookstores show that roasted pork or lechon is the national food/”pambansang pagkain” of our nation? In this poster you can see the different national symbols like our national fruit/pambansang prutas, national fish/pambansang isda, and national leaves/pambangsang dahon.

With all due respect with our non Muslim brothers and sisters who eat pork, this discussion does not in any way open an insensitive argument. I just plainly want to explain why pork is forbidden or “haram” in Islam. From this discussion, I urge our religious leaders, civil society provocateurs, and Muslim legislators to heed our call to ban “pork barrel” or the Priority Development Assistance Fund or PDAF.

First, let us review what the Holy Quran (holy book of the Muslims) says about pork. The Qur’an prohibits the consumption of pork in no less than four different verses. Pork prohibited in Suratul Baqara Verse 173; Suratul Al Maida Verse 3; Suratul Al Anman Verse 145, and Suratul An Nahl 16:115.

For a Muslim like me, it is enough that I read this verse saying that pork is forbidden to us:

Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked a name other than that of Allah. [Al-Qur’an 5:3]

Thus, it has a spiritual significance and scientific basis as to why pork is absolutely forbidden in Islam, except on extreme cases like when there is no more food that you can eat for your survival, then pork may be allowed. However, based on the number of repetitions that pork was mentioned as haram, no amount of interpretation can ever change the message of the Holy Quran.

On the scientific point of view, pork contains micro-organisms like Helminthes, like roundworm, pinworm, and hookworm among others. One of the most dangerous of these worms is Taenia Solium, which in a layman’s terminology is called tapeworm. It harbors in the intestine and is very long. Its ova i.e. eggs, enter the blood stream and can reach almost all the organs of the body. If it enters the brain it can cause memory loss. If it enters the heart it can cause heart attack and if it enters the eye it can cause blindness. If it enters the liver it can cause liver damage. It can damage almost all the organs of the body.

Some of us will argue that if you cook the flesh of swine, then these micro-organisms die, but in a research project undertaken in the US, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering from Taenia tichurasis, twenty two had cooked the pork very well. This indicates that the ovas present in the pork do not die under normal cooking temperature.

Pork has very little muscle building material and contains excess of fat. This fat gets deposited in the vessels and can cause hypertension and heart attack. (Sources: Islamic Research Foundation, Mumbai, India)

In terms of cultural views, pig is the filthiest animal on earth. It lives and thrives on muck, feces and dirt. It is the best scavenger that God has produced. In places where there are no toilets, people excrete in the open air. Very often excreta are cleared by pigs.

The symbol of corruption is also related to pork, thus we have now the pork barrel scam. In Islamic Jurisprudence, both the consumption of Pork (meat) and corruption is not permitted.

The Holy Quran mentioned in Chapter 2:188:

“And do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful].”

Leviticus & Deuteronomy are about dietary habits for a Human to survive. Our ancient ancestors had no medical knowledge & thus had to depend on our Creator's teachings for long term survival.

They were mostly agrarian societies, congregated near river sources for water. They lived off vegetable crops & fish which was in abundance. Husbandry farm animals such as cow, goats, etc were for tilling the land to sow crops & for milk, & only a few were occasionally ritually sacrificed to show appreciation & thanks for a good harvests. Such animals were seldom eaten, or else there would be none to work the farms.

As Humankind progress, so did our medical knowledge. The young can eat meats & often do for the high protein such offers, as their digestive system functions well & often exercise due to work or play, to work off the fats & calories.

However, as one ages to their sedentary 50s, the Human metabolism rate slows down, & unable to process the fats as fast as one could while young, thus leading to block arteries causing High Cholesterol sickness - chest pains, strokes, etc. Red meats such beef, mutton & worse - fatty pork are the main causes of such.

It can be cured by avoiding red meats, or at least go for the lean & sirloin parts & taken in MODERATION. Vegetables, fruits, well prepared chicken & fish are best. With such lifestyles changes, one will be able to avoid medical ailments that our ancient ancestors were UNAWARE of back then, but WERE TAUGHT to live longer & healthier.

The old and new testaments operate under different spiritual laws. Know that and you will find the truth

Jesus came for the Jewish dispensation, to overthrow Judaism which has become ossified, corrupt and subject to the tyranny of the rabbis, Pharisses, scribes and lawyers. The Jews rejected Jesus as their Messiah, and are doomed to hell, except for those handful who converted to Christianity.

Christians follow the precepts of the New Testament, not the Talmud, Torah or Old Testament.

christianity and islam spread globally because the believers were waging war everywhere and conquering lands. otherwise it will still be a middle eastern folklore religion?

Yes, the spread of Christianity and Islam was achieved by war and conquest - Crusades, Roman Empire, New World colonization, Moghuls, Ottoman empire... Buddhism and Hinduism were spread by peaceful means, mainly trade.

All Muddle East monotheist religions like to spew nonsense. If they think our food unclean, then their thoughts are unclean - always focused on Jihads, 72 virgins or smiting of enemies, or oppression and non tolerance of other religions.
