Kojak Bt: Hi Mr Yeo, I have a question to ask you with regard to the employment of Singaporeans at the IRs. RWS has said that 70% of its staff are locals. As a Singaporean, I would like to know specifically how many of these locals employed are Singaporeans? I recalled either you or your PAP colleagues have said in parliament th…at one of the main reasons for having IRs is to create jobs for Singaporeans. I further recalled a figure of 35,000 was mentioned. Could you care to comment, since you are one of the main proponents for having the IRs here?

Dear Kojak, thank you for asking this very relevant question.
You have clearly done your homework.
I am very impressed.

I have discussed this with my fellow PAP elites and even grasslooters.
Then I spent a few days going over it while holidaying at my beach-front chalet near <BLANKED-FOR-SECURITY>.
After much serious contemplation,

My answer to you is,

___________"Go Ask Your MP lah !"[/size]

George Yeo
If I recall correctly, direct employment by the two IRs will be about 10,000. Economists like Tan Khee Giap believe that the actual increase in employment will be in the tens of thousands. There is little doubt that the two IRs will give a big boost to our economy. When I visited RWS, I was told that the nurseries in Singapore could hardly supply... See More all the plants and flowers they needed. I don't have the actual numbers but the majority of those I met at RWS were Singaporeans. My worry is not the economic impact which is very positive, but the social impact. Some families will be hurt by gambling and this is a problem we have to address.

this is like asking someone has he taken his dinner, his reply is that today breakfast got tao hui zui very nice.

I've just replied him on his fb:

Kojak Bt >> If I recall correctly, direct employment by the two IRs will be about 10,000.

Ok, according to PM Lee's IR proposal to the parliament on 18 Apr 2005 (http://app.mti.gov.sg/data/pages/606/doc/Ministerial%20Statement%20-%20PM%2018apr05.pdf), PM Lee said that the 2 IRs will create about 35,000 jobs both directly and indirectly.

One year later during the National Day Rally 2006 speech on 20 Aug 2006 (
http://www.straitstimes.com/STI/STIMEDIA/sp/PMspeech/PM%20lee%20NDR%20in%20mandarin.pdf), PM Lee said, "One example is the Marina Bay IR project. The IR will create over 30,000 jobs, with 10,000 in the resort, and another 20,000 in other hotels, restaurants and shopping malls. There will be a wide range of jobs available, including jobs at the top-end and jobs for ordinary workers. These jobs are suitable for both young and old Singaporeans."... See More

And 2 years later during the May Day Rally speech on 1 May 2008 (http://www.asiaone.com/Business/News/SME%2BCentral/Story/A1Story20080502-63027.html), PM Lee said, "The Marina Bay IR alone will eventually create 10,000 jobs. The Sentosa IR will create a similar number. They need so many workers, they even asked the NTUC to help find and train workers!"

Clearly, PM Lee is promising Singaporeans that about 20,000 jobs, largely meant for us Singaporeans, will be created by the 2 IRs directly. But I think even if only 10,000 jobs are created, that's fine too.

No doubt, there will be a multiplying effect in the economy due to the 2 IRs and I'm sure more jobs will be created indirectly. However, for now, even assuming that the 2 IRs will generate only 10,000 jobs directly, I think Singaporeans would like to know the truth and that is, exactly how many of these jobs directly created by the IRs go to Singaporeans? I understand RWS has mentioned that they currently already have a staff of 8,000. I'm sure it's not that difficult for the Govt to ask for the Singaporean employment figure from RWS, is it?

George Motherfarker

George,
I was also formerly from the air-force. You can say we were colleagues, being there around the same time.

I was unqualified to see confidential reports.....such as one where a major commented that a lieutenant was nothing more than an overpaid glorified document courier.....but what to do?.....a sergeant pushed the confidential report in my face.....not the only sergeant to do that kind of thing...heh heh heh. No big deal, such reports, for the next thing you know, he was promoted captain. Of course the fella would have a problem. He can't for the life of him pass his IPPT, just like me.

Which brings us to you. Of course, 2.414 is no problem for you....since you can still easily do 5. But, in 12 short years, you rose from officer cadet to brigadier general, with a MBA from Harvard Business School....good enough to be trade and industry minister for 8 odd years. Never fired a bullet in a skirmish, never mind a war? No real experience running a business?....Like that I can also be accountant general.

George,
Do you understand what is meant by: 'If you are not of a certain economic class, you should not even think of going there. You should confine yourself to 4D, Toto or horse racing.'

Why then do I read that foreign workers were running amok at RWS? How is it possible?

Anyway, not that I don't trust your words, but could you allow me to see with my own eyes?.....'the majority of those you met at RWS were Singaporeans'......shitizens? I don't want to part with $100 just to do that, but hey, you could frisk me? I won't bring a cent in so I cannot gamble.....so that you don't have to worry about....'the social impact'.....and the.....'problem you then have to address'?
