That's my understanding as well. Ninja were seldom(never?) involved in open combat so there's no point carrying a 'ninja sword'. They were the covert agents deployed more in sabotage and reconnaissance. For assassinations, they usually use whatever is practical.. Long range projectile weapons or poison. They operate very much like the israeli moussad of today.

There is also no 'ninja uniform' like we see in the movies. Most of them dress to blend in the environment. Monks, enemy soldiers, farmers etc

remember my reference of shaolin san jie koon, it meant to be use as example that the nunchaku was itself influence by chinese martial art weapons.
read a bit more on japan, then u will see those hollywood movies are plain BS. Even japanese manga authors admit nunchaku is not a japan weapon. Just because okinawa is under japan rule, it dont make the residents there japanese decent. They have a seperate culture, seperate langague and even seperate martial skill. Even okinawa swords were heavily influence by chinese, they dont use the katana like japan warriors.
Even today, there were hatred against US for letting japan took back the islands instead of direct independence.

Please don't flatter yourself. I have never disputed anything based on personal biases. It happens that you post a lot and by posting a lot without verification means more mistakes and misinformation.

Sleaguepunter, that is correct. Okinawa (Ryuku kingdom, 15th century) was very separate from Japan and was captured and forcibly incorporated. There is an article on Wiki:

Their culture was a complete mix even before that with strong chinese influences. The central government had to force migration to Okinawa to ensure that it becomes and remain Japanese as all other languages, etc were prohibited.

Even today, folks in Okinawa are not really highly regarded in central areas in Japan.
