<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"-->MORE than one in 10 people with a gambling addiction have suicidal tendencies, according to the latest research here.
A study was done on 350 people treated between 2001 and last year at the National Addictions Management Service (Nams) run by the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).
The study found that many had mental health issues alongside the addiction. Attempts at suicide ranked the highest at 15 per cent, followed by depression at 12 per cent and substance or alcohol use at between 3 per cent and 10 per cent.
Although local data is not available, overseas studies have found that suicide rates are higher among gamblers than those who abuse alcohol or substance, said Dr Thomas Lee Kae Meng, deputy chief of IMH's addiction medicine department.
'We have seen gamblers who have tried to gas themselves in a car or have had access to weapons,' he said.
The study wanted to chart the profile of Asian gamblers as not much data is available. It found that the majority of gambling addicts are Chinese males around the age of 40.
'With the integrated resorts coming up, it's unique for the study to look at this group of people who for the longest time have not been identified to have a problem until they get into trouble,' said Dr Daniel Fung, a senior consultant psychiatrist at IMH.
Counsellors The Straits Times spoke to also said suicidal thoughts were common among those seeking help for gambling problems.
'It's quite normal for them to have such tendencies, especially when they have unsecured or illegal debts and they think they have no way out,' said Reverend Tan Lye Keng, executive director of One Hope Centre, which runs a support group for some 70 gambling addicts and their families.
The data could serve to inform primary care doctors on what they may be dealing with, said Dr Lee. 'Let's say they turn up at polyclinics and GP clinics and ask for sleeping pills and have depression or drink alcohol. Doctors might want to ask if they have a gambling problem,' he said.
