Lee Kuan Yew challenges opposition to a contest in Tanjong Pagar

By Dominique Loh

Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has challenged the opposition to contest in his constituency in the upcoming general election.

He was speaking to residents on Sunday at a Tanjong Pagar community event where residents living in the area adopted the Alexandra Park Connector and the Alexandra Canal.

In unveiling Tanjong Pagar's new 5-year master plan, Mr Lee said it would improve the quality of life in the area.

The plan will include the Alexandra Park Connector, which will link the area to the rest of the 170-kilometre island wide network.

Other improvements will mean a more inviting and conducive living environment with lush greenery along a clean waterway.

Mr Lee said: "All this is not attractive if people throw rubbish plastic bags, bottles, all kinds of things, especially people who live around the place. You have a sense of ownership, your children will play there, go fishing, please make an effort to keep this place beautiful and clean."

But he added that all of the upgrading done in the area would not have been possible if not for a growing Singapore economy and good government.

He also told the parents at the event to encourage their children who are old enough to marry to do so.

Mr Lee said parents had a role to play in changing their children's mindsets about marriage.

Turning to the coming election, Mr Lee said he welcomed a contest.

He said: "So I told Low Thia Khiang of Workers' Party and Chiam See Tong: you have been parliament for over 10 years and 20 years, well known, collect five or six good candidates and contest a GRC win it, run the GRC for five years. Prove you can run the area and later on people will vote for you to form the government and you can run Singapore."

"I hope this Tanjong Pagar constituency will be contested. Because too many no-contest, the party branches get slack. I think we should have a contest I want to have a contest it'll be good for the constituency it'll be good for the PAP the organisation."

Minister Mentor Lee said the 5-year master plan announcement was not because of the upcoming election.

In fact such upgrading programme is a continual process that's been revised revamped many times.

Dr Chong Weng Chiew, MP, Tanjong Pagar GRC, said: "Future upgrading programmes are actually from the feedback from residents from grassroots and fellow MPs, so these are their requests and we act on what the residents want. All upgrading programmes are well received, by all residents, going forward this is what we will focus on, what the residents request this was what they wanted we will go in that direction."

Some S$550 million were spent on the last round of upgrading, and Dr Chong says he expects at least the same amount to be spent this time. - CNA/ch
