Heard it was a Kiwi helicopter pilot from NZAF at Sembawang Air Base who flew the SAF Commandos for the rescue. There was a small detachment of NZAF helicopters at Sembawang Air Base at that time.

I believe that you are correct, that is it was a NZ pilot who was flying the rescue helicopter.

The only correct thing he did was to score the top grades to secure the scholarships.

However one of my uncles who was his schoolmate said this the other day: When everyone has porridge and soy sauce to eat, and have to help out in the father's shop etc, no $$$ to buy textbooks - this guy has a DRIVER to pick him from school, eats GOOD food, and has all the resources to study well - textbooks, extra tuition, quiet home environment to study...... not like 5-6 fucking sibling and 100 other cousins in the same house trying to eat your homework.....
