Just heard that my visa would be approved soon by my future employer in Perth.

Any suggestions for a good middle-class area with good schools around that I can rent for S$2400-S$2800 per month?

It's not what you can afford, it's whether landlords and agents wanna rent to you their premises. You go to an open house in perth and 15 - 20 people are there looking at the same property. Place a downpayment and wait to see if you are lucky enough to get the place. Or else go to agents office for a refund and start over.

Also the need of references in order to rent. Landlords in Perth currently favours FIFO workers whom just stay a few days a month. Have enough cash for hotel stay of least a month. Booked hotel way in advance.

That is why I am staying away from talking about Perth.

Everyone is coming to the Golden state from all over the world.

My office cleaners are Taiwanese Working Holidays visa holders (can work for 6 months per workplace).
Even my receptionist is American, and she is more enterprising than the Aussies.

One of the things that I hated in Perth was the place I stayed in. An apartment in Leederville. My company paid for my hotel stay for a month and I was going to open houses on off days but in the end I had to settle for a shitty (450 a week) apartment. Even the apartment in JB which I am staying right now is 10 times better.

Housing is a major issue in Perth. Met alot of migrants from all over the world with the same problem. Some stayed in hotels for nearly 3 months before getting a house of their choice. Even NZ landers colleagues of mine have it tough getting a rental unit. Most were given houses way off Perth city, that's why I noticed alot of coloured people in places on the outskirts of perth.

Besides that, the parks and beaches were owesome. Fremantle was my favourite hangout with the family.

Having said that... for TS budget of $2400-$2800 a month, should be able to easily afford a nice rental home. Say in Claremont/MosmanPark/Subiaco/Cottlesloe areas

Thanks. Was thinking of something like A$1800-A$2200 pm. I see in Australia rentals are quoted on a weekly basis, so I guess my budget is something between 450-500 per week. I've been offered by my potential employer to rent a house in the south of Perth he owns in Bull Creek for $500, is that generally a good area for families with Primary school going kids?

I think it depends where ur workplace is.. and also whether u wanna be a two car owning family... i pay rent abit over the odds so that my wife can do the daily errands without a car... renting in perth is a nightmare...went to a house viewing in east perth which is meant for rent...but within 30 mins owner got a offer too good to refuse he end up selling it..

Yes. Bullcreek area is very popular, especially with Singaporeans. $500 per wk should get you some decent abode there. There are some popular schools nearby like Rossmoyne. This school also very popular with ex-Singaporeans and other Asians.

Good advice. I think its better to get the home nearer the schools that you want to put your kids in so as to monimise the travel time for them. Best is walking distance or 2 - 5min drive. For the parent going to work can always drive or take train, so diatance fm home to office is less of an issue.

I'll be Fly In Fly out, working for a training solutions provider north east from Perth. So I guess one car will suffice for now as I won't be in Perth most of the time, that's why schools is an important consideration for me as I would like my kids to be exposed to the local culture.

Looking at google maps, I noticed there is another private school there, but I'd rather my kids go to public and mix more with the general populace.

Being totally new to Perth, I just thought that I'd double check my facts, but it seems that if I can secure the job and the rent, 70% of my biggest fears would put to rest.

Moreover, you can work almost anywhere in the EU. Any thoughts?

Portugal can be a very nice place if you are into certain type of lifestyles.

I like western Europe a lot.

If the package comes with EU residency rights and working rights, then it may worth looking into.

Just exploring options and found it. You can find out more their web page or wait a little while more for Spain which is even better. With Euro160K for a house and no need to even stay there. As good as a sales of citizenship.

Hmmm....I think that is a good thing to explore further.

But it would have been better if the EU residency and work rights also apply to the UK. I am not sure if that is the case. If so, I would personally look into this. Europe is a cool place. I like it a lot.

Stayed in Holland for about 2 months back in 04 as I have an Aunt who lives there, it's much more expensive in terms of groceries and clothing. But overall it's a great place to relax. Even the farms in Holland are beautiful unlike farms you see in SE asia or even Canada. I could easily get her to sponsor me but it's not as straight forward. You got to learn the Dutch language as a criteria for immigration. I remember the bars and casinos in Amsterdam were awesome. The red light district are divided into ethnic sections whereby if you wanna screw a different race every night you can easily do so. It was weird though, one side of the river was apartments and beautiful houses, the other side is the red light district connected by small bridges like the ones in boat quay.
