bros, so what you think ah ?

budget LED LCD tv are only edge-lit so is it still better than ''normal'' LCD tv ?

got big difference between Full HD and HD Ready ?

Toshiba vs Panasonic...............which one u think better ah ?

Toshiba got 10-bit video processing but does it have a 10-bit panel as i read huge difference between 10-bit and 8-bit panels...............

velly sorry hor.................my very 1st LCD TV lah................my neck problems caused a lot of money so took so long to buy one...............

For me LED TV more better and clearer.. LED TVs used to be expensive in the beginning but now prices are falling down.. Went to Courts Toa Payoh few days ago and saw a 32 inch Sony Bravia LED selling for less than $600.. Phillips also not bad.. Their 42 inch LED TV selling for less than $1700.. Many more brands like LG, Panasonic and Toshiba LED TVs selling at a good price..

too bad no space lah, otherwise i buy 42'' plasma liao..................much cheaper and superior picture.............

You should consider brands like Chimei, Sampo and BenQ, if they're available in Sg.

The edge-lit is definitely a better choice because it's slimmer than back-lit (or whatever it's called) and consumes less electricity because less LED bulbs are used. Don't fall for the gimmicks. Yes, the color contrast may be better but it comes with its own problems.

If you're going to opt for wall mounting, then it makes no difference whether it's LCD or LED. You're not going to watch TV from the sides to notice the thickness. If LCD is 30% lower in price, then I will definitely go for LCD.

but i read many people say edge-lit is not good vs back-lit, that's why now LED can be cheaper becoz of edge-lit............

i don't care about thickness or electricity................

if only there are plasma tvs smaller than 40''....................

then there's the question of LED HD-Ready (1080i) vs LCD Full HD (1080p)...................which is better leh ?

To begin with, if you're neither bothered with thickness nor electricity consumption, then why consider LED or LCD ? You should just stick to CRT.

Thickness and electrical consumption are the main selling points of LED. If you're not bothered by these two aspects of a TV, then LED is out for you. You don't even have to go into details concerning LED edge lit vs LED backlit. The official selling point of backlit is it offers 'local dimming' so there are more LED bulbs at the back of the panel. With edge-lit, the LED light source in the form of bulbs are present at the sides and light is reflected across the entire panel using micro mirrors instead. So the sides are more likely to be brighter than the centre of the panel.

1080i and 1080p are both High Definition display formats for HDTVs. 1080i and 1080p signals actually contain the same information. Both 1080i and 1080p represent a 1920x1080 pixel resolution (1,920 pixels across the screen by 1,080 pixels down the screen). The difference between 1080i and 1080p is in the way the signal is sent from a source component or displayed on an HDTV screen. FYI, 'i' stands for 'interlaced' while 'p' stands for 'progressive.

Effectively an LED-backlight is a replacement for the uniform CCFL backlight that gives a LCD TV its brightness.

Instead of being always on - and therefore not able to dim in specific areas of the screen - LED lights are arranged either along the sides of the screen ('Edge' LED) or arranged behind the entire screen ('Direct' or 'Full' LED).

These LED lights can switch on and off individually, which means the image can have greater contrast - bright whites and deep black in the same image.

A good example of how this works is with a dark and dingy movie like Batman Begins. For night scenes a traditional CCFL-backlit LCD TV isn't able to dim sufficiently enough to make the black areas of the image convincing, and neither is it able to show night areas, such as headlights or street lamps.

The end result is a picture that isn't dynamic, and dominated by grey where there should be black, and indistinguishable details that ought to be brightly lit. Put simply, the contrast of the panel isn't very good.

A plasma TV doesn't have this problem - each pixel can light up, or switch-off, according to the demands of the picture.

LED vs CCFL

So to counteract its lack of contrast, LED lights are being used instead of CCFL backlights, though how many - and exactly how they're arranged - depends on the brand.

'Edge LED' systems use an array of LED lights along the side that fire light across into the centre of the screen. It's technically the least effective system in terms of achieving a high contrast ratio because it doesn't offer 'local dimming'.

As a rule of thumb this system does help produce the slimmest flatscreen TVs around. It's also cheaper to produce.

'Direct' LED systems, which could involve somewhere in the region of 200+ LED lights arranged all over the screen in clusters, is visually the most impressive technology, but it's more expensive - and adds a few extra millimetres to the depth of the TV.

Edge LED vs Direct LED

Which is better depends on what consumers want. "Edge LED offers various advantages over Direct LED such as a thinner chassis (meaning a larger TV in a smaller position in the home), it is more power efficient (saving the consumer money on utility bills), and picture clarity is improved," a Samsung spokesperson told TechRadar.

"Direct LED can create a 'halo effect' meaning that clarity from source content is lost. However, Edge LED suffers less from halo effect as the LEDs themselves are positioned around the edge of the TV, meaning the light source is emitting from the guide plate, producing less blurring of the image."

As you might have gathered from that, Samsung is committed to Edge LED tech, citing it as the "superior technology." It's 'halo' argument is valid; clusters of LED lights in the behind the screen can cause bright objects to appear with a slight ring around them. Edge sets do, however, struggle to produce as high a contrast - especially when compared to that other big-screen technology: plasma.

I often visit Bets Denki & am surprised at the price difference between some TV's. For the same size you have sub-$1,000 prices to sets costing several thousands.

Why is there such a price differential on some sets:confused: Is spending all that $$$ getting you a better product:confused:

I just bought one myself, and I did a lot of homework and research first. My conclusions:

Buy LED, LCD will be phased out by most manufacturers in the near future, LCD considered past technology.
Buy big, the prices are coming down for 50in and bigger TVs. But depends on the size of you viewing room. Larger screens are best viewed at a certain distance from the sofa.
Buy SMART TV, you get wifi connectivity. Its fantastic convenience, u do not have to hook up your laptop to the TV with a HDMI cable to watch Youtube videos or anything else available on line. Porn becomes super clear on a large screen LED. Feels like u are almost there at the orgy yourself. LOL
Buy Samsung, they are the best makers of LED TVs. Their screen technology is good, as you can see from their other products like Galaxy handphones.
Buy a set with a high refresh rate. 240hz is standard, but worth money to get 480 even higher if you can afford it.

PM me if you want to know what I bought.

no space for big tv lah....................otherwise i buy plasma liao, no need to trouble you guys .................even 32'' will be a tight squeeze for the cabinet...................

LED is the future but maybe becoz cheaper for them to produce plus marketing gimmick ? got experts say ''normal'' LCD can be better than some LED..................

so now 240hz refresh rate is standard liao huh ? i thought still 120hz....................

GOD IS MY DOG;1065098..............even 32'' will be a tight squeeze for the cabinet................... ...[/QUOTE said:
Be careful if you are going to enclose a TV in a cabinet. If there is not enough airflow you might have problems. I had a 32" in a cabinet but had problems. Fortunately it was still within the warranty period & the service was free.

I now have the TV set located in the open & haven't had any further problems. The reliability problem may have been caused by heat build-up in the enclosed cabinet.

thanks for the advice but it's a open area, just that the sides are too narrow to fit bigger than 32''................

sigh..................otherwise, buying a plasma is a no brainer..................

Just doing a ideas exploration here.

According to my understanding, isn't it true that now a days, there are a lot more HD quality videos streamed on line free of charge? Even entertainments of free videos in HD quality.

Isn't it true that now a days as long as you have a high speed internet connection, you can use your computer to be a all rounder entertainment system?

So, if this is the case, is there truly a need for big screen television which most of you don't use now a days?

Just some ideas exploration, care to comment?
