SINGAPORE - Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew says it could take between three and seven years for Singapore's second integrated resort - Marina Bay Sands - to reach full capacity. That would be when the economic payoff from the increase in tourism and the growth in the convention business will be felt fully.
He gave this assessment yesterday after touring Marina Bay Sands, a day ahead of its grand opening. With Las Vegas Sands' chairman Sheldon Adelson by his side, the Minister Mentor spent one-and-half hours at the integrated resort.
Mr Lee said that he wanted to form his own impressions about the $5.5 billion mega-project.
As part of the tour, Mr Lee was shown the convention centre, the retail strip, casino and the breathtaking view from the Sky Park.
Speaking to reporters, MM Lee said: "It's a very big project. When it's all filled up, it will increase our tourist trade and people who come here for conventions multi-fold. That's quite a job to do in a couple of years. The word has got to spread. It can't spread with just one news conference or one display. People have to come here, enjoy it, and word of mouth will bring more in."
Mr Adelson, however, said the resort would be "running at full speed by 2011".
