He was speaking at the opening of the Bhai Maharaj Singh Memorial Temple on Saturday.

Singapore is even-handed to all communities and they have been able to practise their religions, traditions and cultures.

Mr Lee, who is visiting a Sikh temple for the first time in 20 years, said that the Sikh community has done well under the country's meritocratic system.

He said: "The government has not disadvantaged any minority group. We are a multi-racial and multi-religious society. We give everyone the opportunity to do well, and thus we have a harmonious society."

Mr Lee noted that a large number of Sikhs are now born and bred locally and English is the first language for most of them.

He pointed out that without good English, career prospects are limited.

He added that mastering two languages is difficult and parents have to be realistic on the standards that they demand their children.

Mr Lee also said that the government will give priority to citizens.

He said: "We have moderated the inflow of foreign workers and new immigrants, and also widened the differentiation between citizens and non-citizens. However, Singapore - with its low birth rates - needs to attract immigrants to augment our population."

Mr Lee added that those immigrants are better educated and professionals who bring new skills to Singapore.

He stressed that this is critical to the nation's long-term survival.

马来西亚内幕者网站报道，巫统和民联罕见地异口同声抨击马哈迪的上述言论为强词夺理。

　　（吉隆坡综合讯）马来西亚前首相马哈迪担心“未来的政府” 若打开门户迎接新移民，目前占国家60%人口的马来族，可能会变成少数民族。

　　“就像过去1930年代，马来人当时的族群比例是比其他族群少。”

　　他昨日在其博客中写道，没有人能确保马国的移民政策永久不变，看看一些“疯狂的马来领袖”，为了一圆当首相的梦想，任何疯狂的事情都可以答应。

　　马哈迪强调，未来是不可预知的。

　　他希望马来人做好准备，迎接可能发生的新移民大举迁移，马来人在未来可能沦为廉价劳工或司机。

　　他也说：“没关系啦！当劳工或司机，也不是很糟糕的事！”

　　另一方面，据马来西亚内幕者网站报道，巫统和民联罕见地异口同声抨击马哈迪的上述言论为强词夺理。

　　巫统浦莱区国会议员诺贾斯兰说，马哈迪上述的谈话导致马来人更加分裂。

　　他说：“马哈迪的言论强词夺理，没有经过周详考虑年轻马来人是否能够正确的理解他所发出的信息，他这样做反而把马来人吓得更加马来化。”

新山区国会议员沙里尔也不认同马哈迪的言论，他认为马哈迪只是在推测未来，也没有把东马的因素考虑在内，所以他并不会担忧这种事情会发生。

　　公正党实权领袖安华认为，马哈迪的言论事实上阻碍马来人进步，这将导致马来人更加没有安全感。

　　民政党青年团炮轰马哈迪发表有违“一个马来西亚”精神的极端言论，有失其前首相的身份。

　　民青团总团长林时彬发表文告说，国家领袖退位后仍关心国家政治是好事，但是那些退休后却不甘寂寞，频频发表危言耸听且惟恐天下不乱言论的领袖，则绝对要不得！

　　他强调，首相纳吉提倡的“一个马来西亚”政策绝对是全国各族人民所追求的，很遗憾马哈迪却一再发表与这政策背道而驰的极端言论。
