Treated like an unwelcome guest at The Cathay

I WAS at The Cathay on Wednesday to have lunch and watch a movie with a friend. As I arrived early, I decided to buy the tickets before my friend arrived. Then I realised that the movie I wanted to watch was not shown at the cinema any more.
So I decided to check other places where the movie was still screening. As my friend would join me soon, I opened my laptop at the information counter to view some movie listings while I waited, instead of finding a cafe to sit down, buy a drink and do the same.
A few minutes into my search, a security guard told me I was not allowed to do that. I asked why, as I was not doing anything illegal, in anyone's way or causing any disturbance. He was not able to give me an answer, nor was the receptionist who soon joined in the chorus of what I was not allowed to do.
It made me feel unwelcome as a guest at the shopping mall, and I left, deciding to spend the day with my friend at Plaza Singapura instead.
While I believe the staff were just following orders or standard procedures, my question is this: Is this how a customer should be treated?
