Hence the similarity between Japanese (and also Korean) pronunciation and modern-day Hokkien and Cantonese (both having retained many phonetic features of Middle Chinese) pronunciation of many borrowed words. You can find your away around in Japan just by reading Kanji characters on signposts as all the original meanings have been retained.
