Spanish Football Federation president Villar refused to present Liga trophy to Madrid on the pitch - report
Los Blancos had wanted to receive their title on a stage in the centre of the Santiago Bernabeu, but the former Spain international sat defiantly in his seat in the stands
May 14, 2012 11:50:00 PM
By Mark Doyle
Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Angel Maria Villar reportedly refused to go onto the Santiago Bernabeu pitch to present Real Madrid with the Liga trophy after Sunday's 4-1 victory over Mallorca.
According to AS, Los Blancos had intended to lift the cup on a specially constructed stage in the middle of the field but the former Athletic Bilbao midfielder remained in the stand.
Consequently, Villar, who was whistled by the Madrid crowd, presented the title to Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos in front of the Bernabeu's royal box.
The sight of Casillas and Ramos raising the trophy together was significant as it was the first time that two captains had been put forward to receive the cup.
It was therefore the final piece of history in a record-breaking season for Madrid, whose victory over Mallorca saw them become the first side to reach the 100-point mark in a single campaign.
The 2012-13 Spanish top flight will begin a week earlier than last term to help the national team prepare better for 2014 World Cup qualifiers, it has been announced

By Karthick Arvinth
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the LFP have revealed that the 2012-13 Primera Division season will begin on the weekend of August 18 and 19.
This is in line with the schedule for the recently concluded 2011-12 campaign, which was slated to kick off on August 20 but was postponed by a week due to player strike action.
The two-legged Spanish Supercopa - to be contested between Real Madrid and either Athletic Bilbao or Barcelona - will be played on August 23 and 30, with the league campaign already underway.
The early start to the season is intended to help the Spanish national team, with coach Vicente del Bosque wanting his players to be fully fit going into several 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
The final round of fixtures will be played on May 19, 2013, with the Copa del Rey final tentatively planned for May 8.

Atletico Madrid line up Giroud as Falcao replacement - report
The Spanish capital club are on the lookout for potential replacements for the Colombian and have identified the in-form Frenchman as a strong candidate to fill the gap
May 15, 2012 1:10:00 AM
Atletico Madrid are considering a move for Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud if Radamel Falcao leaves, AS reports.
The Colombia international has been tipped to leave Atletico after enjoying an impressive debut season at the Spanish club following his €40 million transfer from Porto last summer.
Atleti have refused to say whether they will be able to fend off interest in the highly-rated striker, and Spanish sources claim that Los Rojiblancos are already planning for life without the 26-year-old.
Giroud, an international for France, has been in sensational form this season, having so far netted 21 Ligue 1 goals as Montpellier sit at the summit, on the verge of claiming the first title of their history.
Should negotiations for Giroud fall through, Atletico will reportedly move for Burak Yilmaz, who topped the Turkish Super League's scoring charts with 34 goals.
Villarreal's players asked Atletico Madrid to ease the pressure - report
The Yellow Submarine were desperate to avoid relegation to the second division and reportedly resorted to desperate actions to prevent losing the match
May 15, 2012 11:19:00 PM
By Luis Mira
Villarreal's players asked Atletico Madrid to ease off in Sunday's contest between the two clubs, Canal Plus reports.
A goal from Radamel Falcao in the dying stages of the match earned Atletico the three points and sent the Yellow Submarine to the Segunda Division for the 2012-13 season.
TV footage shows Villarreal midfielder Javi Camunas telling Atletico's players that winning the match would be pointless after Malaga had taken the lead against Sporting Gijon, a result that would see the Rojiblancos finish fifth in the league and outside the Champions League qualification places.
"Filipe Luis, Malaga have scored," he reportedly exclaimed. "There is nothing for you to do here!"
Desperate to see the club avoid the drop, Villarreal's players then reportedly made up a second goal by Malaga in a bid to persuade Atletico to lower the intensity.
"Diego, Malaga are up 2-0," Carlos Marchena said.
After the match, a heartbroken Marchena promised that Villarreal would have their revenge over Atleti.
"[Diego] Godin, Diego..., motherf***ers, this is not over! Diego, Filipe Luis, this is not over!"

In Pictures: 'A new and daring look' - Barcelona's strips for next season
The Blaugrana have broken with tradition by using 'blurred stripes' on their home jersey for the 2012-13 season, while their away kit is a brilliant mix of orange and yellow

Barcelona unveiled their new strips for next season in the city's Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) on Tuesday morning. Given that there is nothing traditional about the home jersey for the 2012-13 campaign, it was a fitting venue.
Indeed, the club's official website has described it as "a new and daring look" for one of the most iconic shirts in world football and there can be no doubt that the use of "blurred stripes" is going to divide opinion across the globe.
The incredibly colourful orange and yellow away jersey is also something of an assault on the senses, though when it comes to second strips, Blaugrana supporters have at least gotten used to a large degree of experimentation from kit designers over the past decade or so.

Bielsa accepts blame for Copa del Rey defeat and says future will be sorted 'one way or another' next week
The 56-year-old Argentine is considered one of the finest coaches in the game today, but he feels that he got his tactics wrong against the Blaugrana at the Vicente Calderon

Athletic Bilbao boss Marcelo Bielsa took full responsibility for his side's 3-0 defeat byBarcelona in the final of the Copa del Rey final on Friday night, and revealed that his future with the club will be resolved "one way or another" next week.
The Basques conceded all three goals in the opening 25 minutes of the match at the Vicente Calderon, with Pedro making an early breakthrough for the Blaugrana before netting again after Lionel Messi had racked up his 73rd goal of the season.
Bielsa, who is out of contract this summer, has been widely praised for his work with Athletic this season but he felt that he had got his tactics wrong on the night.
"I accept that the approach we presented was not successful," the Argentine conceded. "I realise that. I'm the decision-maker.
"I represent and am responsible for a team that today did not carry through the plan I had established.
"Now we will evaluate the continuity of the coaching staff with a meeting between all parties concerned. I suppose in the course of next week the subject of my continuity must be decided in one way or another."
Many Athletic players had been reduced to tears by their 3-0 defeat in the final of the Europa League by Atletico Madrid and Bielsa admitted that they were hurting again after the loss to Barca.
"I saw a lot of pain on the players' faces after the game," the former Chile boss confessed. "We have a very young team.
"But we can now go one of two ways: we can use the experience because there is room for growth; or admit that there was an inability to cope with the high demands placed upon us this year."
The 56-year-old Bielsa only arrived at San Mames at the beginning of the 2011-12 campaign.
In 2016 I'll move to the city my daughter goes to study in, reveals Mourinho
The two-time Champions League winner committed himself to Los Blancos for a further four years earlier this week, but has declared that his long-term future lies elsewhere

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has revealed that he will take over a club in whatever city his daughter goes to study in when his contract with Los Blancos expires in 2016.
The Portuguese coach has only just signed a new deal which ties him to the Santiago Bernabeu for a further four years. However, Mourinho has now revealed that his long-term future is intertwined with that of his daughter.
"In football, you can agree a five-year contract, and if you lose two matches, the contract can end," the two-time Champions League winner mused during the Sustainable Success & Leadership Conference in Ankara.
"My contract ends until 2016. I hope that I can do my job well and can continue at Real Madrid.
"In 2016, my daughter will go to university. If that happens, I will choose the city that she goes to university in. Hopefully they play good football in that country."
Addressing his side's record-breaking points haul en route to winning La Liga, Mourinho argued that Madrid's achievement was made all the more noteworthy because of the identity of their title rivals.
"Real Madrid finished with 100 points; Barcelona with 91," he explained. "That's a points difference as large as in many of the minor leagues.
"You don't come across this kind of situation in the major leagues. We can use England, Italy & France as an example. Nine points is a very big gap.
"We should also not forget that we were fighting against the world's best team in the league."
Despite their joy at ending Barca's three-year hold on the Spanish title, Madrid's season was not without its disappointment, in light of their Champions League semi-final shoot-out defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich. However, Mourinho was philosophical on his team's European exit.
"The best team doesn't necessarily win the Champions League," he reasoned. "In the knockout rounds anything can happen, and one moment can change everything.
"For example, in the final, Bayern took 18 corners, Chelsea took one, and scored. But in the league there are 40 games, and only the best become the champions.
"If you are not very good one week, or the referee makes a mistake, you can win the following week."
Meanwhile, Mourinho heaped praise on Madrid trequartista Mesut Ozil, claiming that he compares favourably with two former Madrid legends.
"He is the best number 10 in the world," the former Inter boss enthused. "Everyone loves him and see a bit of [Luis] Figo and [Zinedine] Zidane in him. He will make history at Real Madrid."
Mourinho arrived at Madrid in the summer of 2010, fresh from his treble-winning campaign with Inter.

A new book on the Argentine superstar reveals the little-known story of how he doubted his abilities early on in Pep's reign, when he struggled to gel with Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Pep Guardiola could barely believe his eyes. Sat on the Barcelona bus alongside friend, confidant and club colleague Manel Estiarte, the Catalan coach had just received a surprising SMS.
But this was no ordinary text. No. The melancholic message was from Lionel Messi. The Argentine, sat several rows back, was suffering in silence. Unable to express himself with direct dialogue, he took to typing and technology to get his viewpoint across. He wasn't happy.
These were early days in Guardiola's glorious governance: Barca had claimed an unprecented six trophies in a wonderful 15-month spell and everything appeared rosy for the Catalan club - at least on the outside.
Pep's second season saw Barca claim four out of a possible six trophies, but they missed out on the Champions League and the Copa del Rey. Behind the scenes, all was not well.
The exact wording of Messi's message is disputed, but the sentiment straightforward. "I can see that I am no longer important to the team, so ..." Unlike his perfect plays on the pitch, Messi had left this one unfinished.
Depressed and disillusioned, the world's best player was deadly serious. Two poor performances had led him to question his hero's role at Barca, but worst of all, there was a villain on the scene.
Separate ways | Ibra and Pep failed to bond at Camp Nou
Just 22 and still not quite at the peak of his powers, the Argentine felt threatened by the presence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Sweden striker signed for Barcelona the previous summer from Inter in a deal worth a massive €69 million. Barca had a new star on the scene and Messi's nose was out of joint.
"The appearance of Ibrahimovic, a signing with which Guardiola had persisted," Sebastian Fest and Alex Juillard write in a new book entitled 'The Messi Mystery', "had been bad news for Leo."
It continues: "Messi knew it and started to make his feelings known to a coach who had won him over by giving him the green light to play for Argentina at the Olympic Games in Beijing. But this time there was danger; Messi had failed to shine in a few games and Ibrahimovic was playing well. Suddenly, there were complications for the Argentine."
David Villa, who later replaced Ibrahimovic at Camp Nou, was told in no uncertain terms upon his arrival that he should avoid competing with Messi. At first he tried to, but later he understood and was soon left in awe by the astonishing Argentine. "I know that one day, when images of Leo appear and I am nearby, I can say: 'I played with him'," Villa told El Pais in an interview.
"Ibrahimovic could say the same," Fest and Juillard added. "But he never will." The Swede had demanded the same salary as Messi on arrival at Camp Nou and his ego matched the inflated investment by the Catalan club, who sent Samuel Eto'o to San Siro as part of the deal.

Not long after Barca lost to Jose Mourinho's Inter in the Champions League semi-finals, Ibrahimovic hit out at Guardiola. "You have no balls! You are s**t scared of Mourinho!" he yelled at Pep, according to his autobiography, 'I am Zlatan'. And he added: "He preferred to make Messi happy - he didn't value me."
In this case, however, few can argue with Guardiola's 'philosophy': moving Messi into the centre at the expense of the static Swede brought Barca to new heights. As it turned out, the town was not big enough for both men - and Ibra had to go.
The relationship between coach and player proved irreparable and the former Ajax forward made way in the summer of 2010, joining AC Milan on a loan deal which would later become a permanent move.
Messi, meanwhile, moved into the centre in a full-time capacity and the rest is history: 53 goals in 2010-11 and 72 more so far (plus another five trophies) this term provide proof that Guardiola made the right decision - the only decision. Given a straight choice between the two, it had to be the South American.
Alex Juillard spent several years working in Buenos Aires as a correspondent for L'Equipe; Sebastian Fest is Head of Sports in Spanish for German news agency dpa. Their new book, 'The Messi Mystery', was published in French earlier this month and will be out in Spanish and English later on this year
Pep looked to Leo in his player's hour of need and the Argentine answered as only he knows how - by winning games. Messi's message on the bus had set the alarm bells ringing, but the coach's counter had been crystal clear. "Leo, even when playing below his best, helps you win matches," the 41-year later explained. "You have to try to play him all of the time. Nothing that we have done would be possible without him, while playing at this level without him would be impossible, too. He is unquestionable."
Indeed. And as the pair look to draw a line under their peerless partnership with yet another trophy on Friday, when they meet Athletic Bilbao in the final of the Copa del Rey in what will be Guardiola's last game in charge, it's hard to believe there was ever any doubt.

Deportivo La Coruna have secured their return to La Liga courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Huesca on Sunday evening.
Going into the penultimate round of the Segunda Division season four points clear of second-placed Celta Vigo at the summit of the standings, the Galicians knew that a win would seal promotion with a week to spare.
Depor fell behind at the Riazor when former Liverpool winger Antonio Nunez struck just after the half-hour mark, but Riki equalised for the hosts shortly before the break.
On-loan Newcastle United midfielder Xisco Jimenez then put Depor ahead with 20 minutes to go and Jose Luis Oltra's men held on to clinch the Segunda Division title and a return to the top flight at the very first attempt.
Depor, who won the first division title in 2000, went down last May after finishing 18th in La Liga.

Fox Sports sent shockwaves across the sporting world by claiming that Barcelona star Lionel Messi had died on Sunday.
The 'news' appeared on the organisation's Norte Twitter feed and although the message was quickly deleted, it was noticed by several bemused Spanish media outlets.
“We announce the sad news that Lionel Messi died of cardiopulmonary arrest during a workout,” the tweet read.
Rumours of Messi's death were false as the three-time Ballon d'Or winner, who scored his 73rd goal of the season in Friday's Copa del Rey final win over Athletic Bilbao, remains very much alive and well.
Fox Sports have yet to reveal the reasons behind the misinformation but it is believed that their Twitter feed was hacked.
