Real Madrid legend Hugo Sanchez revealed that he advised Los Blancos to sign Chelseastriker Didier Drogba a long time ago.

The Ivorian forward scored the winning goal in Chelsea's 1-0 Champions League triumph over Barcelona on Wednesday, and Sanchez admitted that he has been a fan of the African for some time now.

"One of the strikers that I wanted to see at Madrid is Drogba".

"I said the same thing about Ruud van Nistelrooy, and I recommended Drogba years ago.

"The thing is that too much time has passed now for him to join Madrid. No one paid attention to what I said.

"But Drogba has long been one of my favourite strikers in the world, and he had an amazing match against Barca yesterday."

Looking ahead to Saturday's Clasico at Camp Nou, the 53-year-old believes that Madrid will look to attack due to their four-point advantage over Barca in the Liga table.

"Madrid will need to be aggressive," Sanchez noted. "The difference in points will allow them to take some risks. If you give Barca enough space, it is very hard to beat them.

"Only a few teams can beat them at Camp Nou, but Madrid are one of them. They have to go out to win, because that is all that they can do.

"Last season, Jose Mourinho's strategy in some matches was not the correct one, and when you play at home, you always have to be brave and try to win.

"I hope he will get it right, just like he did in the Copa del Rey final."

The Portuguese coach has been coy over his long-term future at Madrid, but Sanchez has indicated that he does not want to see the former Inter boss leave anytime soon.

"I would like him to stay because he is doing very good things at the club," he added.

"I have agreed with him in many of the things he has said and done. In other cases, I would not have said or done the same thing, but I understand why he is like that.

"Mourinho is very clever, I really like his intelligence because I am a bit like him as a coach."

Manchester United target €32m-rated Athletic Bilbao midfielder De Marcos - report

The 22-year-old featured prominently as the Basque side sent the Red Devils crashing out of the Europa League and will reportedly be watched by Sir Alex Ferguson's scouts again

176176hp2.jpg

Manchester United have made Athletic Bilbao midfielder Oscar de Marcos their primary summer transfer window target, according to The Daily Mirror.

The 22-year-old, who helped the Basque side send United out of the Europa League, reportedly has a price tag of €32 million (£26m).

Sir Alex Ferguson will send his top scout to watch De Marcos in action in the first leg of the semi-final of the competition when Bilbao take on Sporting Lisbon on Thursday.

De Marcos scored in both legs of the tie against United and Ferguson is thought to be compiling a full dossier on the player before meeting the release clause written into his contract.

United are not said to be planning many major additions at the end of the current campaign but will look to strengthen the midfield having felt the impact of Paul Scholes' return from retirement.

Young midfielder Davide Petrucci, meanwhile, will be handed a new three-year contract at Old Trafford.

Petrucci, who has captained United's reserve team, had been linked with a move away from Manchester, with reports in Portugal claiming he could be involved in a possible deal for Benfica star Nicolas Gaitan.

The Italian is now expected to agree terms on a new deal and could spend time out on loan next season as he looks to break into the United first team.

La Liga wrap: Real land El Clasico blow

22 April 2012

12427373000.jpg

Real Madrid moved seven points clear in La Liga after a 2-1 win at Barcelona on Saturday, while Sporting Gijon also won. Jose Mourinho's men effectively sealed their first league title since the 2007-08 season with their gutsy away win, which came thanks to strikes from Sami Khedira and Cristiano Ronaldo. Real now lead the Spanish league by seven points with four matches to play, and virtually puts an end to Barcelona's hopes of a fourth successive crown.

The visitors made a bright start, with Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes forced to tip over Ronaldo's early header.
Real Madrid shot-stopper Iker Casillas was off his line to quickly deny Dani Alves, before saving from Cristian Tello moments later. Mourinho's side took the lead after just 17 minutes though, with Khedira poking home from close range. Simone Pepe headed a corner at Valdes and he spilled the save, allowing the German international to bag his fourth goal of the season.

Barcelona should have levelled nine minutes later when Lionel Messi's sublime through-ball found Xavi but he dragged his effort wide when he had only Casillas to beat.
Barca's bid for an equaliser continued in the second half as Tello and Xavi fired shots on goal, although neither effort was on target. Pep Guardiola then introduced Chilean Alexis Sanchez, in place of Xavi, with 21 minutes left and the change paid immediate dividends.

Tello fired at Casillas and a penalty box scramble ensued, ending with Sanchez squeezing the ball home near the goal line to send the Camp Nou crowd into raptures.
Barcelona - who could have gone within a point of Real Madrid with a victory - were immediately hit with a sucker punch though as a breathtaking Mezut Oezil pass released Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward charged past the onrushing Valdes and converted from a tricky angle to restore Real Madrid's lead.

From that point on, Real defended in numbers and retained possession, making life difficult for a Barcelona side who saw their hopes of winning a fourth successive La Liga title fade before their eyes.
In other results, Sporting Gijon's bid for survival received a boost as they beat a nine-man Rayo Vallecano outfit 2-1. Argentine forward Gaston Sangoy gave Sporting the lead after 18 minutes but defender Labaka levelled proceedings just six minutes into the second half.

Labaka would turn from hero to villain though, as he was sent off with 14 minutes left.
That gave Sporting a numerical advantage and Croatian substitute Mate Bilic made them pay, netting the winner on 78 minutes. Rayo Vallecano defender Casado was sent off for a second yellow card in the dying stages. Also on Saturday, Mallorca defeated Real Zaragoza 1-0 thanks to Victor's first-half strike while Sevilla and Levante played out a 1-1 draw.

A privately owned club would sell Messi but Barcelona never will, claims Rosell

The Blaugrana supremo has attacked the way in which other teams are run, particularly those funded by billionaire businessmen, such as Manchester City and Chelsea

Apr 21, 2012 3:45:00 PM

By Mark Doyle

174425hp2.jpg

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has claimed that whereas a privately-owned club would cash in on Lionel Messi, the Blaugrana never will on account of their ownership structure.

The Catalan side are effectively owned and controlled by its members, meaning Rosell and his fellow board answer to the supporters.

Consequently, the Blaugrana supremo believes that the club will always be motivated by success and not financial gain, using the example of Barca's most prized asset to underline his point.

"Messi is not for sale, whatever the price," Rosell declared in an interview with L'Equipe. "Where would we buy a new Messi from?"

"A corporation would sell him because it is a company seeking profits. But this is not the case with us."

Rosell also claimed that the success of clubs funded by billionaire owners, such as Manchester City and Chelsea, will not last and that they will ultimately fold.

"Competition with such corporations is difficult ... but long term it is we who will have more success," he reasoned.

"There will come a day when a millionaire, a patron, will grow tired of investing money and the club will cease to exist."

However, Rosell admitted that Barcelona remain in dire financial straits because of the recklessness of the previous regime.

"We inherited a debt of €500 million," he explained. "We have imposed a policy of extreme austerity for two years.

"We have also received support from the Qatar Foundation; without that help we would be in great difficulty."

Barcelona are the reigning world, European and Spanish champions.

KEEP CALM ... Cristiano Ronaldo settles the Nou Camp crowd after netting winner

ANTONY KASTRINAKIS, European Football Correspondent

Last Updated: 22nd April 2012

PEP GUARDIOLA last night insisted Barcelona will dump Chelsea out of the Champions League — despite their heart-breaking loss to Real Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s winner at the Nou Camp left leaders Real seven points clear of Barca with just four matches to play.

Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg will now make or break Barcelona’s season and boss Guardiola insisted his troops will go all out to overcome their 1-0 deficit.

He said: “The players are sad but we will be prepared for Tuesday.

"The players know the importance of the match against Chelsea. We cannot fail on Tuesday.”

Sami Khedhira slotted home the 16th-minute opener after Victor Valdes saved Pepe’s header.

Barca supersub Alexis scrambled home a 70th-minute leveller but his side’s joy was shortlived as Ronaldo restored Madrid’s lead three minutes later.

Jose Mourinho’s Real have now hit 109 goals this season — beating their previous record of 107 under John Toshack in 1990.

Meanwhile, Barca’s Andres Iniesta has refused to join in the condemnation of ‘diving’ Didier Drogba.

The Chelsea striker was widely accused of play-acting in last week’s first leg.

La Liga wrap: Turan brace guides Atletico, Valencia win

23 April 2012

12427373490.jpg

Atletico Madrid tuned up for Thursday's Europa League second leg against Valencia with a comprehensive 3-1 win over Espanyol in La Liga.Arda Turan scored a brace after defender, and team-mate, Diego Godin's opener and Didac's equaliser for Espanyol.

Godin latched onto Diego's cross in the ninth minute to head home but the lead did not last long with Didac's left-footed shot finding the net 10 minutes later.
With scores locked at 1-1, Turkish international Turan turned it on with two goals in two minutes to make sure of the points for Atletico.

Diego Simeone's side now turn their attentions to Valencia as they look to protect their 4-2 first-leg lead.
Valencia were also comfortable victors on Sunday, with a 4-0 victory at home against a nine-man Real Betis' side consolidating third place on the table. Athletic Bilbao won 1-0 at Racing Santander ahead of their Europa League semi-final second leg with Sporting Lisbon on Thursday.

Gaizka Toquero's 12th-minute finish from close range was all that separated the sides and lifted Bilbao back into the European places.
The loss was a dire one for Santander who are now 11 points from safety with only four games to play. Granada moved a step closer to safety with a 1-0 win at home to Getafe - their first in four games - to break eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Real Sociedad and Villarreal shared the points in a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Anoeta.
Villarreal looked to have sealed a vital three points before Carlos Vela's equaliser four minutes from time meant they are six rather than eight points clear of the drop.

Messi has changed a lot as he now argues with team-mates and referees, claims former Barcelona boss Antic

The 63-year-old, who had a short stint at Camp Nou in 2003, believes that the Blaugrana's talisman has become increasingly surly in recent months

Apr 26, 2012 6:10:00 PM

By Mark Doyle

100655hp2.jpg

Former Barcelona coach Radomir Antic attacked Lionel Messi for a perceived change in the forward's demeanour, claiming the Argentine's alleged mood change has affected his performances of late.

While Messi is widely lauded for the way in which he conducts himself on the field, Antic believes that the three-time Ballon d'Or winner is now far more surly than he once was.

"He argues with team-mates and with referees' decisions," the Serb told Com Radio. "This Messi has changed a lot.

"You cannot dispute his quality but his state of mind in the last few months has not helped his abilities.

"Messi is now intermittent. He doesn't help recover the ball, the defensive work starts when the play finishes."

Antic also argued that the 24-year-old attacker went missing after striking the crossbar with a spot-kick early in the second half of Tuesday's Champions League clash with Chelsea.

"When you miss a penalty you are not just missing the penalty, you lose a player because he is affected by the miss," the 63-year-old declared.

Turning his attention to the current speculation over Pep Guardiola's future as Barcelona boss, Antic opined that the former Spain international should wait until the end of the season before making his mind up over whether to sign a new contract with the Catalan outfit.

"At this time there is still a long way to go, the final of the Copa [del Rey] is still there and making a decision now would not be right for a great coach and a club as big as Barcelona," he reasoned.

"But training Barcelona is not easy because even after so much success, there are always comparisons with the past."

Antic arrived at Camp Nou in January 2003 with the club in turmoil following the dismissal of Louis van Gaal and led the Blaugrana from 15th to 6th place by the season's end.

Frank de Boer: I will not leave Ajax for Barcelona

The Dutchman has stressed that he is not interested in succeeding Pep Guardiola as the man in charge of the Catalan giants as it is "not the right time" for him to move

Apr 27, 2012 12:18:00 PM

By Stefan Coerts

167933hp2.jpg

Ajax coach Frank de Boer has made it clear that he has no intention to leave the Eredivisie champions for Barcelona at the end of the 2011-12 campaign.

The Blaugrana are in the market for a new trainer due to the expected departure of Pep Guardiola, who will announce a decision on his future at a press conference at 13.30CET, and De Boer has been mentioned as a potential candidate to replace the 41-year-old Catalan.

Nevertheless, the Dutchman is not interested in a return to Camp Nou at this stage of his managerial career.

"I will not leave you guys. I'd miss you too much," said De Boer light-heartedly to reporters at a press conference.

"It's not the right time for me to move to a big club like Barcelona. I speak some Spanish, but not good enough to be coach of a Spanish team.

"I understand Pep's decision to leave Barcelona, because he's won it all. It's a real shame, though, that he is leaving. Frank Rijkaard started things at Barca, but Guardiola perfected it."

De Boer spent five seasons as a player at Barcelona from 1998 until 2003. He won just one title, La Liga, with the Blaugrana.

Ancelotti: Barcelona are not finished and will come back stronger than ever

The Italian brushed off suggestions that the Blaugrana's cycle has peaked, claiming that while Messi, Xavi and Iniesta remain at Camp Nou, they will always be the team to beat

Paris Saint-Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti insists Barcelona will come back stronger than ever after a 2011-12 campaign that looks set to end in disappointment for the Catalan giants.

The Blaugrana all but surrendered the Primera Division title to Real Madrid last weekend and were knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea on Tuesday, leading some critics to claim that their dominance under Pep Guardiola is coming to an end.

However, Ancelotti has laughed off such suggestions, stating that Barca have enough talent in their ranks to continue to challenge on all fronts for the foreseeable future.

"Until Messi, Xavi, [Andres] Iniesta and Co. depart, how can you say that their time is over," Ancelotti told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Barcelona are not finished. Indeed, they will only come back stronger than ever.

"They say Messi is out of form because of a penalty miss, but it is naive to criticise Messi, who is the best player in the world.

"Guardiola is great, he has won everything and entertained the world with his football philosophy.

"Why should he change? It is easy to do certain things in hindsight.

"Maybe they are a bit tired. You must consider the increased strength of their opponents. Real Madrid were more continuous and more concrete this season in La Liga, and they deserved to win at Camp Nou."

Barcelona do not need a 'Plan B', insists Athletic Bilbao boss Bielsa

The Blaugrana are under fire from certain sections of the media for being one-dimensional after their failure to overcome Chelsea in the semi-finals of the Champions League

It has been suggested following the Blaugrana's semi-final exit at Camp Nou on Tuesday night that while the Catalans' famed 'Tiki-Taka' brand of football is easy on the eye, it cannot be relied upon to unlock every defence and that Pep Guardiola needs to vary his side's approach to the game.

However, Bielsa insists that Barca should not even consider abandoning their footballing philosophy.

"This idea of a 'Plan B' is not one I understand," the Argentine coach told reporters during a press conference on Wednesday.

"The game yesterday [at Camp Nou] indicates that attacking football has nuances. But styles cannot be changed.

"Even if the best team doesn't always win, the best way of winning is always by trying to be the best."

It has also been claimed that Blaugrana are now suffering from fatigue after nearly four years at the top, which would be good news for Athletic, who face Barca in the Copa del Rey final next month.

However, Bielsa is actually hoping that the reigning world champions are in peak physical condition when they collide at the Vicente Calderon.

"A tired Barcelona is obviously better for us," he confessed. "But I would prefer us to beat the best Barcelona."

Meanwhile, Athletic go into their Europa League semi-final second-leg clash with Sporting Lisbon at San Mames on Thursday trailing 2-1 after last week's visit to the Portuguese capital and Bielsa revealed that his primary focus is on striking the right balance between defence and offense.

"We must defend well so that they don't score, and attack in order to find the net ourselves," he admitted.

"But the best way of expressing ourselves is just by playing the football we always play."

Athletic's meeting with Sporting in Basque country gets under way at 21.05CET.

Barcelona remind me of Inter's 1967 team, says Luis Suarez

The retired Spanish midfielder says that the Nerazzurri also lost it all in a few days during his time but insists the Catalans will be able to bounce back

Retired midfielder Luis Suarez has drawn comparisons between Barcelona's current moment and the one he experienced with Inter in 1967.

The Catalan club are all but out of the race for the Liga title after suffering a 2-1 defeat against Real Madrid, which leaves them seven points behind Los Blancos, with only four matches remaining.

The Blaugrana were then eliminated from the Champions League as a result of Tuesday's 2-2 draw against Chelsea, and Suarez shared the emotions he felt with Inter when he endured a similar week.

"Losing so much in the space of a few days is a tremendous blow," Suarez told ANSA. "This is a heavy blow, even for experienced players who are used to winning.

"It must be said that the squads were very small back then and we were very tired after a tough season.

"Jair da Costa and I did not even play the European Cup final against Celtic. The disappointment was very strong and we lost to Mantova in the last match, which gave Juventus the Scudetto.

"At that time, if you did not win the Scudetto you did not qualify for the European Cup, so those defeats marked the fate of the team, which fell apart."

However, the 76-year-old has no doubt that Barca will be able to pick themselves up from their recent setbacks.

"Now it is different, the Champions League is more accessible. They have a squad filled with great players and talented youngsters. With or without Pep Guardiola, they will surely win things again."
