La Liga wrap: Messi on song as Barca thump Valencia 20 February 2012
Barcelona's Lionel Messi scored four goals in the Catalan club's 5-1 win over Valencia, on a high-scoring Sunday in La Liga that yielded 28 goals. In Barcelona, Pablo Piatti handed Valencia the lead in the ninth minute, volleying Sofiane Feghouli's cross past Victor Valdes in Barcelona's goal, but going behind simply sparked Barcelona into action, with Messi leading the way.
The Argentine scored his first in the 22nd minute, sliding the ball under Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves from the tightest of angles, before handing the home side the lead five minutes later with a tap-in after Alves failed to hold his initial shot.On 76 minutes, Messi had his hat-trick, lashing home the rebound after Cristian Tello's shot was parried by Alves into the number 10's path.
Messi grabbed his fourth with five minutes to go, delicately chipping the Valencia goalkeeper after bursting clear of the defence.Xavi completed Barcelona's dominant performance with a goal in the first minute of injury time, trimming Real Madrid's lead on top of the La Liga table to 10 points and moving them 11 points ahead of Valencia who are third.
In Gijon, Atletico Madrid squandered an opportunity to go fourth, drawing with Sporting 1-1. An own goal by Roberto Canella put the away side ahead, but Sebastien Eguren levelled the game before half-time, and neither side was unable to find a winning goal, although Atletico's strike duo Radamel Falcao and Adrian Lopez could have easily had a couple of goals each.
That result allowed Athletic Bilbao to stay fourth after recording a superb 3-0 win over fellow Champions League chasers Malaga. In a match with numerous chances at either end, Marcelo Bielsa's side proved more clinical after the break with Fernando Amorebieta, Mikel San Jose and Toquero all scoring in a five-minute period to secure the points at home.
The win means Bilbao move level with Espanyol on 33 points, while Malaga, despite being in eighth position, are just two points further back.Rayo Vallecano won 5-3 against hosts Levante in a thrilling game, which included six goals in the second half. Rayo's attacking pair of Lass and Diego da Silva Costa both scored twice for the visitors.
In other results, Granada took advantage of Asier Illarramendi's red card just before half-time to cruise to a 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad and Mallorca thumped Villarreal 4-0.

Brescia president Luigi Corioni has warned Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola that he would find life hard at Inter.
The Spaniard, whose Barca contract runs out at the end of the season, has been linked with a move to San Siro as Nerazzurri boss Claudio Ranieri comes under increasing pressure.
"He could surely come to Inter, but he would require time, which is something that Inter do not give to coaches," Corioni told Sky Sport Italia.
"You cannot expect Inter to play like his Barca all of a sudden.
"In my opinion, however, he will stay at Camp Nou for a long time."
Corioni then stated that he believes Inter made a big mistake when they sold midfielder Andrea Pirlo, who started his career at Brescia, to AC Milan in 2001, as the 32-year-old became an icon at their cross-city rivals.
"I called Massimo [Moratti, Inter president] and I told him that I had a very young phenomenon who no one knew and I asked him if he wanted the player," he explained.
"He told me to wait a few days to think it over. After a couple of days he called me and signed the player.
"At Inter, however, Pirlo was unsucessful and he joined Milan in a part-exchange deal with Guly.
"This deal made Moratti lose at least €100 million. He could not make his mark there, he played for Reginna before returning to Brescia on loan."

Malaga came from behind to thump Real Zaragoza 5-1 in La Liga on Saturday, while Levante also won.Manuel Pellegrini's Malaga were stunned when the league's bottom side took the lead on 23 minutes through Aranda. But Sebastian Fernandez scored a crucial goal on the stroke of half-time for the hosts and it changed the complexion of the match completely.
Malaga started the second half in buoyant fashion and their pressure eventually told when Paraguayan defender Paulo da Silva turned the ball into his own net on 67 minutes. That opened the floodgates and Argentinean defender Martin Demichelis joined Isco and Jose Salomon Rondon as goalscorers in the final 15 minutes for the winners.
Malaga's victory saw them climb to fifth on the table, one spot below Levante who left it late before winning 2-1 at Espanyol.Valdo scored the opener after 24 minutes for Levante but it looked like both sides would share the spoils after Kalu Uche equalised for the hosts.
Uche's goal came 15 minutes from time and set up an exciting finale, with substitute Ruben Suarez scoring the winner on 89 minutes, just moments after being introduced. In other matches, Christian Stuani's penalty with 16 minutes to play saw Racing Santander claim a point in a 1-1 draw against Sporting Gijon, while Real Betis and Getafe's match ended in the same scoreline.

A rival to Eden Hazard - Why Barcelona are watching Montpellier sensation Younes Belhanda
Feb 25, 2012 12:00:00 PM

by Robin Bairner | French Football Editor
Last weekend at Parc des Princes, it was Paris Saint-Germain’s stars who were being most closely observed by the watching football world, but, for all the money Les Parisiens have spent, it was Montpellier’s Younes Belhanda - a young man who celebrates his 22nd birthday on Saturday - who shone the brightest. And his timing could not have been any better, as Barcelona were reportedly watching his every move.
Rene Girard’s side, constructed on an annual budget of less than what last weekend’s hosts paid for Javier Pastore - who spent much of the game on the bench having just overcome injury - are a mere point behind PSG going into the final third of the season, and Belhanda has been arguably their leading figure in the unexpected title charge.
So far, much of the discussion in the media has surrounded Olivier Giroud, who is presently Ligue 1’s top scorer and has doubled as a fantastic assist outlet for La Paillade, but, as the summer approaches, expect Belhanda to begin to hog the spotlight.
It’s a phenomenon that the never-understated president of the club, Louis Nicollin, predicted at the start of the campaign.
"In one year we will not speak of Eden Hazard ... We will have another name in our mouth: Belhanda"
- Montpellier president Nicollin

“In one year we will not speak of Eden Hazard ... We will have another name in our mouth: Belhanda,” the owner of the Languedoc-Roussillon side boasted in the summer.
These words have proven to be rather prophetic. Although Hazard’s is a name that is not going to go away, Belhanda has shown over the course of the campaign that his is also worth putting in lights.
Inevitably, Nicollin has done as much, explaining: “Belhanda has two of Hazard in his legs.”
Though he is not yet, as his president would suggest, twice the player of Hazard, the midfielder is a 22-year-old of massive potential. A glorious passer of the ball, he has a multi-faceted offensive game that should be the envy of many, yet he remains a relatively undiscovered talent.

The main creative presence in the Montpellier side, the young playmaker was the man to provide the cutting edge in the final third, scoring an unlikely headed goal.

The most eye-catching aspect of Belhanda’s play is his excellent technique. Even in crowded areas of the field, he is able to maintain control of the ball, with his quick feet taking him gracefully past players, although he does not have the raw pace that allows him the versatility to play easily in a wider role.
If he is not quite as comfortable on the wing as Hazard, he can match the Belgian prodigy in the excellence of his set-pieces, while there are a couple of aspects of his game in which he could be argued to surpass the Lille star.
Most notable is that he has the natural finishing instinct that Hazard has only just started to master. Belhanda is in a particularly rich vein of form at present, scoring three times in three games since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, including a headed goal against PSG last weekend. In total, he boasts seven league goals for the campaign, and, although that is an inferior tally to Hazard’s nine, their minutes-per-goal ratios are very similar, the African scoring on average only every four minutes after a player who is less than two months his senior.
While Hazard is the real focus of Lille’s attack, though, Belhanda is a support player in Montpellier’s. Olivier Giroud, Ligue 1’s top scorer with 16 goals, in MHSC’s key man in this regard.

Perhaps the most impressive feature of his play, though, is his patience on the ball. Rarely does the Morocco international become flustered in possession, showing a mature and intelligent head as he waits until the perfect moment before releasing his past. Already he is one of the best in Ligue 1 at this skill, often feeding balls into the channels for the wide players to centre.
Few neutrals would argue that Belhanda is yet at the standard of Hazard, but there can be little doubt that the gap on the pair is closing, and Europe’s top clubs are becoming increasingly aware of that fact.
France have already rued being too slow to snap up the young Morocco-international playmaker, who nervously laughed off questions posed to him on the matter following his dazzling display at the Parc des Princes last Sunday. Barcelona will not want to make the same error, and they will no doubt be keeping a close eye on the player’s progress over the coming weeks.

Atletico Madrid forward Radamel Falcao expressed his bewilderment at the referee's failure to spot Sergio Busquets' handball during Sunday's clash with Barcelona.
Busquets appeared to handle the ball in the area during the dying seconds of the Rojiblancos' 2-1 loss at the Vicente Calderon but match official Perez Lasa waved away the home side's appeals for a penalty.
Falcao believes that the Barca midfielder's offence was obvious and appeared to call the integrity of the referee into question in a post on his Twitter account on Monday.
"I think the only person who didn't see Busquets' handball yesterday [Sunday] was the referee," the Colombia international wrote. "Can it be that he really didn't see it?"
Atletico boss Diego Simeone was also bemused by Lasa's failure to spot the Busquets handball, as well as his decision not to send Dani Alves off when the Brazilian pulled down Felipe Luis midway through the second half.
"The referee was perfect, although there were little things," the Argentine coach told reporters after the game with a wry smile on his face.

Real Madrid coach Mourinho spotted in London amid 'house-hunting' claims & reports of summer switch to Chelsea or Tottenham
The 49-year-old was pictured with fans and has been linked with a return to his former club following increased pressure on Andre Villas-Boas at Stamford Bridge

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho was pictured in London on Tuesday, with reports in both Spain and England claiming he was 'house-hunting' ahead of a possible summer switch to either Tottenham or Chelsea.
Last month, Spanish show Punto Pelota claimed Mourinho would leave the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of June, while The Sunday Times reported the following week that the 49-year-old had decided to return to the Premier League.
Mourinho has refused to confirm or deny the speculation, remaining coy on his future and brushing off questions on the subject.
Sources who had claimed he would definitely leave have recently backed down, revealing he may stay because the mood has changed at the club.
A 10-point La Liga lead over Barca and recent showings of attractive, attacking football (not least against the Catalans in the Copa second leg) are said to have helped in that respect.
The former Chelsea coach has previously spoken of his affection for the English game and has admitted he would welcome a return to the Premier League.
The Portuguese posed for pictures with fans in London on Tuesday and was spotted in department stores with his wife.
Reports in AS and on BBC Radio claimed the coach was looking for a house in the English capital, although a potential property purchase may be for his daughter, who is moving to London to study in the near future.
With Chelsea coach Andre Villas-Boas under pressure, Mourinho has been linked with a move back to Stamford Bridge to replace his former colleague, while Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has made the Portuguese his top target should Harry Redknapp leave to manage England this summer.
Mourinho criticised Madrid fans for their poor turnout in the hard-fought 1-0 win at nearby Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, while he recently claimed he preferred to "support" former clubs Chelsea and Inter after fans of both sides had cheered his name.

Barcelona are hoping that the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) will side with them and select the Vicente Calderon to host their Copa del Rey final clash with Athletic Bilbao.
Representatives from the two clubs met at the RFEF's headquarters at Las Rozas on Friday to discuss the matter but failed to reach an agreement over either the venue or the date.
Barca would like the tournament decider staged at the home of Atletico Madrid on May 25, while Bilbao would rather it is held at the Cartuja in Seville five days earlier.
According to AS, Barca spokesman Toni Freixa believes that the Vicente Calderon is the right choice as "it is a stadium ready for a game" and that "Madrid is the best option for both clubs because of its proximity [to both cities]".
Freixa also explained that they could not agree to Bilbao's request for the game to go ahead on May 20 because they want to leave that weekend free in case they reach the final of the Champions League, which is scheduled for the day before.
The RFEF will now reportedly decide on a venue at a meeting of its board of directors next Tuesday.
Both Barcelona and Bilbao had hoped that the game would be staged at the Santiago Bernabeu but occupants Real Madrid claimed that they could not make their home available because of scheduled construction work on the stadium.
Madrid's refusal sparked controversy but Freixa insisted that Barca are not interested in questioning the veracity of los Blancos' excuse.
"We are sure that the final, in normal conditions, would have been played at the Santiago Bernabeu because it is the ideal venue," he said. "But we will not argue with Real Madrid."
The last time that Barca and Bilbao met in the Copa del Rey final, in 2009 at Mestalla, fans from both clubs booed the national anthem.
La Liga preview: Race is on to impress Spain coach
1 March 2012
Athletic Bilbao and Valencia may be out of contention for the La Liga title, but one man will be watching both teams closely this weekend.Spain coach Vicente del Bosque saw his team dispatch Venezuela 5-0 in an international friendly on Wednesday, a match which featured a second-half hat-trick from Roberto Soldado.
The Valencia striker did not start the game at Malaga's La Rosaleda, instead coming on at half-time for Fernando Llorente. With Barca's David Villa injured and Chelsea man Fernando Torres woefully out of form - the latter was left out of the Spain squad altogether - Del Bosque must decide who will lead the line when Spain attempt to defend their European Championship crown in Poland and Ukraine later this year.
Athletic centre-forward Llorente featured off the bench in Spain's 2010 World Cup success, but Soldado's blistering form this season finally proved too much for Del Bosque to ignore, and he seized his chance in emphatic fashion this week. There is nothing to separate Soldado and Llorente so far this term - both have scored 20 goals in all competitions, and that form is reflected in the fortunes of their respective clubs.
Valencia, third on the table, are away to promoted club Granada on Sunday. On the same day, Athletic, just six points behind Valencia in fifth place, host Real Sociedad at Estadio San Mames.Later on Sunday, runaway leaders Real Madrid, 10 points clear of defending champions Barcelona, are at home to eighth-placed Espanyol.
A day earlier, Barca are at home to Sporting Gijon, while Atletico Madrid go to Sevilla.Promoted Rayo Vallecano await the visit of Racing Santander, Osasuna make the trip to Mallorca, and Getafe play host to Malaga.Bottom side Real Zaragoza are at home to Villarreal in the early kick-off on Sunday. And on Monday, Real Betis travel to face Levante in the final match of the round.

Following the dismissal of Andre Villas-Boas, three names have been immediately linked with the vacant managerial position at Chelsea. Rafael Benitez, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola head the lists of bookmakers as possible replacements at Stamford Bridge, with the former Liverpool coach seen as the main candidate at this early stage.
However, following contact with a source close to the west London side, Goal dot com can reveal that on this occasion, the bookmakers are heading in the wrong direction. For different reasons, none of the three coaches are currently in the running to take over from interim boss Roberto Di Matteo when the Italian's contract expires in the summer.
And even though his agent Manuel Garcia Quilon denied it yesterday, Goal.com can confirm there was a meeting between Benitez and Chelsea representatives last week. However, the reunion was brought about at the request of the Madrid-born coach, and the English club were happy to hear what he had to say, although they were clear that he was not an option for the final part of the current campaign, given that he is a high-profile manager and mainly because his teams usually start slowly, a luxury that the London side simply cannot afford mid-season and with qualification for next season's Champions League still very much in grave doubt.
What is clear is that Benitez would like nothing more than to sit in the dugout at Stamford Bridge, and he will do anything he can to make a summer switch possible

Nevertheless, the ex-Valencia boss could yet be considered in the summer, although he is not the first choice of Blues owner Roman Abramovich, nor of the Russian's advisers. What is clear is that Benitez would like nothing more than to sit in the dugout at Stamford Bridge - and he will do everything he can to make a summer switch to west London possible.
With Mourinho, Chelsea's concerns are financial. The Portuguese coach usually obliges his teams to spend vast sums of money, something Abramovich is currently unwilling to do. Furthermore, the excellent relationship between the Real Madrid boss and the "heavyweights" in the Blues dressing room also count against him. The Russian magnate is privately convinced that the time for renovation has come, which is likely to mean the end for players like John Terry and Frank Lampard. Should the 'Special One' return to his former home, that is likely to be impossible, while another sticking point is thought to be the Portuguese's demand for complete autonomy in football matters, with the Russian reluctant to cede control as he did in Mourinho's first spell at the club.

With Guardiola, the consensus in London is that he will stay one more season at Barcelona, but in addition, his annual doubts over whether to stay or leave the Catalan club have also caused concern. Chelsea want a long-term project and the Blues bosses doubt the Santpedor-born coach is likely is commit to them for the long haul.
What is for certain is that the soap opera is likely to last several months before the Blues announce their next boss. Chelsea are willing to take their time and will examine several options. Fabio Capello will be interviewed, while some Premier League managers, including Everton's David Moyes, will also be considered. Interim boss Di Matteo could even earn the job on a permanent basis, but the Italian would need an oustanding few months for that to occur.

Several of Real Madrid's most important figures have gathered as the club celebrate its 110th anniversary on Tuesday.
Founded on March 6, 1902 when the first board of directors was assembled, Madrid have become one of the most successful clubs in football, boasting over 60 titles including 31 La Liga trophies and nine European Cup/Champions League crowns.
"The ideology of this club will always be to win, win and win again," club legend Alfredo Di Stafano is quoted as saying by AS.
Francisco Gento, who holds the record for the highest number of European Cup trophies, added that Madrid's consistency makes them a unique case in football.
"What makes this club big is that they never go down, they are always at the top," Gento added.
"I am proud to have played here when the club won the European Cup five years in a row.
"I do not think any club will ever do it again and that makes this club special and unique."
Pachin, who played at Madrid between 1959 and 1968, also spoke about his joy of having represented Los Blancos during his career.
"When you put on this shirt, you get the same feeling as when you win a European Cup," Pachin explained.
"This is the biggest club in the world for all the titles it has won, the quality of the players who have played here, and the quality of its youth system."
Madrid are 10 points clear at the top of the Liga standings, while they face CSKA Moscow in the Champions League Round of 16.
