MOE child porn scholar Jonathan Wong charged with having sex with 14-yr old

SINGAPORE- A former teaching scholar who was found with child pornography while studying in the UK has been charged with underage sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Jonathan Wong, 25, faces 10 charges in total, including seven counts of having sex with a minor, and three charges of committing indecent acts.

Wong had been caught for possessing child pornography while he was an undergraduate at the University of York in Dec 2010. Police had found 50 videos in his computer's hard drive, with half depicting hardcore scenes. Some of the graphic videos featured girls as young as six.

But the former Hwa Chong student was given a six-month sentence suspended for two years, which means he would not have to face jail time if he does not re-offend within two years.

According to the report in Lianhe Wanbao, Wong returned to Singapore in January last year, where he found a job as a sub-editor at a publishing firm.

The offences allegedly occurred from February to June. The Shin Min Daily News reported that Wong, who had a girlfriend then, got to know the teen in church.

The pair communicated online regularly and were close; she addressed him as "daddy" and he called her his "daughter".

Wong discussed topics on sex - including masturbation and oral sex, using 'sex education' as an excuse. He then had sex with the girl at his home and in a public toilet, and also took nude photos of her.

The case only came to light when a teacher contacted the girl's father, who is overseas, to inform him that she had been performing poorly at school. The family resides in Melbourne, Australia, where her father is based.

The girl eventually told her father about her relationship with Wong, and he flew back to Singapore to make a police report.

A 25-year-old man who raped a girl he met through a pen pal column in a teen magazine has had his appeal dismissed yesterday.
The Court of Appeal upheld Wang Jianbin's sentence of 13 years of jail and 15 strokes of the cane.
In 2009, Wang had raped a 13-year-old girl in her bedroom after chasing off her male friend who tried to stop him.
Justice Chao Hick Tin explained his decision as it was a horrendous case that was unusual, because the rapist had gone to the victim's home and attacked her in the presence of others, reported The Straits Times.
He added that if the prosecution had appealed, his sentence could have been longer.
Wang, then a 23-year-old polytechnic student, had started chatting with the schoolgirl online after seeing her address in a magazine. However, he then started to send her sexually explicit messages and insisted to meet.
He showed up at her flat about two months after they had started chatting online, and threatened her and demanded to enter her room, according to The New Paper reports. She complied out of fear.
She also thought she would not come to harm as her brother and his piano teacher were in the living room and she also had two male friends in her home to help protect her.
In her room, Wang began to molest her. One of her friends came in and tried to help, however he was chased out eventually, according to reports. He and the other friend called the police.
Wang was arrested at the scene. He pleaded guilty to statutory rape last year. Charges of criminal intimidation and sexual assault of a minor were taken into consideration at sentencing.
For statutory rape, Wang could have been sentenced up to 20 years' jail, and either caning or a fine.

An unemployed man was jailed for three-and-a-half years on Friday for having sex with a minor and housebreaking and theft by night.

Zulkifri Said, 23, had admitted to having sex on two occasions with the 13-year-old girl at staircase landings.

He also admitted breaking into Calvary Bible Presbyterian Church in Toa Ching Road with Muhammad Herwan Abdul Hamzah, 22, on March 4 this year and got away with property totalling $1,470. Herwan has been jailed for two-and-a-half years for the offence.

A district court heard that Zulkifri and the victim came to know each other over Facebook in 2010. They became a couple not long after that and were in a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship for eight months before they broke up.

They remained friends and would meet each other.

Sometime between November 2010 and February last year, they met and had sex at a staircase landing at a Housing Board block in Toa Payoh.

Sometime in February last year, they met again and spent the night at his house.

The next day, she followed him to a staircase landing in Jurong where they again had sex.

A few days later, they had a quarrel and the victim took an unknown number of pills. She was warded.

A medical social worker reported the underage sex case on Feb 11 last year.

Two other charges of sex with the minor were taken into consideration during his sentencing.
