SINGAPORE: SMRT Trains chief operations officer Alvin Kek Yoke Boon has been sentenced to two weeks' jail and a fine of S$4,000 for drink driving, two months after he was arrested at Woodlands Checkpoint.
In his sentencing on Monday (Jun 25), he was also disqualified from holding or obtaining all classes of driving licences for three years after his release from prison.
According to court documents, Kek, 51, was having drinks with his colleagues at the Temasek Club at Rifle Range Road at about 11pm on April 20.
Kek, who had consumed four mugs of Tiger beer, said he had the drinks as his father had recently passed away.
He left Temasek Club at about 2.30am and drove in the direction of Woodlands, ending up at Woodlands Checkpoint at 2.55am on April 21.
He told an Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer there that he had entered the checkpoint by mistake and had no intention of leaving Singapore.
The ICA officer suspected that he had been drinking as he "reeked of alcohol" and instructed him to alight from the car before escorting him to an office for a breath test.
He was found to have 65 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath, nearly double the limit of 35 micrograms, and was arrested.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Teo Lu Jia called for at least two weeks' jail and a fine of S$4,000, saying that Kek was a repeat drink driver. Kek had previously been convicted of another drink driving offence in 2004.
Ms Teo also noted that Kek had several other previous driving-related offences, including using his mobile phone while driving in 2015 and failing to conform to a red-light signal in 1999.
In a statement to Channel NewsAsia on Thursday, Kek said: "I deeply regret the incident and would like to assure everyone that I will not drink and drive again.”
SMRT's vice-president of corporate communications Margaret Teo told Channel NewsAsia that SMRT "has noted the court's decision".
"Alvin has been suspended from work," she said.
The penalties for drink driving are a jail term of up to six months and a fine of between S$1,000 and S$5,000 for the first offence.
Repeat offenders can be jailed for up to 12 months and fined between S$3,000 and S$10,000.

Alvin Kek, A Former NDP Exco Chairman, Jailed 2 Weeks For Drink Driving
Around 7 years ago,
MINDEF’s Pioneer magazine
interviewed a cheerful and bright young colonel (COL) from the
Singapore Army.
In the feature, COL Alvin Kek described his vision for the 2011 National Day Parade (NDP).
It was a vision he knew well, since COL Kek was the Chairman of that year’s NDP Executive Committee.
The top honour was presented to COL Alvin Kek despite a run in with the law in 2004.
He had been
convicted of drink driving that year, but little is known of the outcome of that conviction.
COL Kek’s star continued to shine and in 2013, he found a cushy job as a top executive at SMRT.
Life at SMRT
When COL Kek – now Mr Kek – joined the beleaguered train operator in 2013, he found himself in a company that the public was largely frustrated with.
A major breakdown in 2011 had shaken confidence in Singapore’s rail system and minor disruptions continued to occur.
But he managed these well and rose through the ranks. Mr Kek was quickly appointed senior vice-president for rail operations.
Unfortunately, rail operations appeared to crumble under his watch:
- In October, the MRT tunnel around Bishan MRT flooded, leading to massive delays.
- In November, two trains collided at Joo Koon. This incident left 36 people injured.
Despite these incidents, Mr Kek was
promoted earlier this year and made the chief operations officer of SMRT’s rail operations.
It was at this peak of his career that Mr Kek’s personal life began to fall apart.
One whiskey too many?
On April 21, police found Mr Kek at Woodlands Checkpoint with 65 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath.
This is almost double the prescribed limit of 35 microgrammes.
He was eventually arrested and charged with drink driving (again).
Local forums, citing
Shin Min Daily News, allege that Mr Kek was not alone in the vehicle when he was arrested in April.
They report that Mr Kek had been with a woman from China.
The chief of SMRT’s rail operations is believed to be married with kids.
In its report,
Yahoo also
claimed that Mr Kek’s father had died shortly before the incident, leading many to wonder if there was a link between the two events.
How the story ends
Mr Alvin Kek was
jailed on Thursday (28 Jun) for drink driving.
The court ordered a jail term of 2 weeks as well as a $4,000 fine.
Mr Kek is also disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles for three years.
SMRT has confirmed that Mr Kek has been suspended from work, but no details yet if the suspension is permanent or temporary.
MustShareNews wishes his family the very best at this difficult time.
