Good point you mentioned above. Russian conscripts have long been sacrificial lambs for the regime. It's a sad tradition for Russian families to have their sons being conscripted and send to the front lines. It's a known fact that many conscripts were killed during previous World Wars. Regular soldiers in Russia are called contract soldiers. Many joined the army due their failure to find normal employment. Many of them were in debts and have long history of being small time criminals so having decent regular income by joining the army help them financially. But many of these young men were not keen in fighting a war and sacrificing themselves for their Motherland. The Russians regarded Nazi Germany and the Chechen terrorists as aggressors who destroyed their normal daily lives , that's why they were motivated to fight against these kind of enemies. It's a different story altogether against Ukraine. Most Russians have blood ties with Ukraine since they used to be together in the USSR. They don't regard Ukraine as the aggressor and many soldiers actually loathe attacking the country. As to why they suffered heavy losses in Afghanistan. Many of then were simply not motivated to fight a war in a hostile unknown terrain knowing that these Afghans were experts in their home turf. Many soldiers became demoralised during the invasion of Afghanistan after seeing heavy losses due to the expert ambush tactics of Afghan soldiers led by Northern Alliance Ahmad Massoud. During that war, the US through the CIA supplied countless modern weapons of that era such as the Stingers to the Afghan tribal commanders. In the end the Russians left Afghanistan with tails between their legs

Countries like Afghanistan, Vietnam and Iraq have lots of terrain that is hostile to large armies. Ukraine is a land of plains. It has historically favoured either numerically superior armies or light mobile troops. It's going to be hard for Ukraine to pull off the same thing like the Afghans did to the Soviet Union.

Russia says it could target Western arms supplies to Ukraine​

Russia said its troops could target supplies of Western weapons in Ukraine, where the Russian army has been advancing.


“We warned the United States that the orchestrated pumping of weapons from a number of countries is not just a dangerous move, it is a move that turns these convoys into legitimate targets,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told state television.


He said Moscow had warned “about the consequences of the thoughtless transfer to Ukraine of weapons like man-portable air defence systems, anti-tank missile systems and so on.”

Russian forces have shelled a mosque in the southern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, where more than 80 adults and children have taken refuge, Ukraine’s foreign ministry said on Saturday.
The ministry said in a tweet that Turkish citizens were among those who were seeking refuge in the mosque when it was bombarded.

“The mosque of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and his wife Roxolana (Hurrem Sultan) in Mariupol was shelled by Russian invaders,” the foreign ministry said. “More than 80 adults and children are hiding there from the shelling, including citizens of Turkey.”​

It did not say if there were any people killed or wounded.
Moscow has denied targeting civilian areas in what it calls a special military operation in Ukraine.
Ukraine has accused Russia of refusing to allow people out of Mariupol, where a blockade has left hundreds of thousands trapped. Russia blames Ukraine for the failure to evacuate people.
Mariupol has been under siege and bombardment for more than two weeks and is encircled by Russian troops.
The situation in the strategic port city was “desperate”, where civilians have been desperately trying to flee, but were without water or heating, and running out of food, a top Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF) executive said on Friday.

Russia has suffered heavy casualties as a result of avoiding human shields. Putin has said they will no longer sacrifice their soldiers to avoid these human shield. They will increase their bombardment as snow is melting.
