SINGAPORE - Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan went off script in his opening address at the fourth joint forum on infrastructure maintenance on Thursday (July 27) morning to take issue with the press.
He said he did not like the way the press has been covering the resignalling project "because they've magnified the problem unfairly".
"Even the main media have turned tabloid. Yes, exciting and so on... frightening readers," Mr Khaw, who is also Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure, said, in what could be seen as an oblique reference to newspapers such as The Straits Times.
In his off-the-cuff remarks, Mr Khaw said resignalling was "a very complex" task. But the media, he said, "think it's so easy... like holding a pen and writing a few articles, and get the signalling done".
"I wish it was so simple. If it were so simple, they don't need us. We can ask the reporter to run the train system," he said to laughter in the audience.

In response, The Straits Times editor Warren Fernandez said: "We are aware of the complexities involved in the resignalling process even as normal operations have to continue. We have reported on that, but we also have to report on the difficulties that crop up along the way, and the impact they have on commuters facing disruptions."

A senior ranking cabinet minister attempting to fool the country in such a deceitful manner is quite unimaginable. No other country with an MRT has this series of mishaps. Manipulating statistics in such a blatant manner shows sign of desperation and complete loss on how to address what is clearly a structural issue. More damning is his complete inability to stand up to the PM and his wife and allowing the PM's wife's company to be delisted and runaway from the mess that SMRT has created.
I was shocked that he turned up and did this and even challenged the media to run the MRT. Sounds like a school kid who could not hold his own in the schoolyard. He already made a fool of himself over the Brampton Bikes when he chose to accept from his Department that all was well until some netizen without access to procurement documents pulled together enough evidence to show that the tender was rigged from start to the end. One would have thought that having been caught once for his shifty approach to good governance he would have learnt from it. In the corporate world, you will be asked to walk the plank for playing around with statistics to feather your nest.
One wonders if we sacrificed competency to deter corruption. This guy is a dud.
