SINGAPORE: Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan has questioned the Singapore Democratic Party's proposal to raise the healthcare budget to at least S$10 billion a year.
This is two-and-a-half times the current budget of about S$4 billion or 4 per cent of GDP.
Using the United States as a example, Mr Khaw said spending more does not necessarily lead to better outcomes.
Instead he said Singapore has achieved similar results in three healthcare indicators using only 4 per cent of GDP.
The minister also criticised the SDP's proposal to fund the increase in the health budget by cutting spending on defence and other areas, saying this would directly impact the foundations of Singapore's prosperity.
But he did note that in the long run, health care spending would have to go up as the population ages.
He reiterated that his focus was on building up wellness programmes.
Mr Khaw clarified what he described as lies over his medical bill. There have been rumours online that his heart bypass operation last year cost him only S$8.
Mr Khaw said the S$8 only referred to his out of pocket expenses and that his total bill for a week's stay in an a Class A ward came up S$25,000.
He said the bulk of this was paid for by MediShield and Medisave.
