KFC Hong Kong serves food from the trash

This video, taken by a deliveryman with his cellphone at KFC's Yuen Long Plaza (元朗广场) outlet in Hong Kong, has been sending shockwaves throughout the territory of late. He recently blew the whistle by telling Hong Kong gossip rag Next Magazine 《壹週刊》 that staff at this outlet would frequently stop kitchen operations, throw away all leftover food, and start cleaning up before the restaurant closes so they can go home on time. During this time, if a customer walks in, employees will pick up the food from the trash and serve it to customers -- and this is apparently all done with the consent of the restaurant manager so they can "avoid reheating the frying machine".

Finger lickin' good eh? According to CSR-Asia, the "outrageous behaviour is said to have been the combined result of young workers not willing to stay long after the official business hours to clean up the kitchen because of the low wages, and the shop management's demand to make their branch an 'A grade' one by saving costs." In other words, people, if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. If this is what employees at KFC in Hong Kong are doing, we shudder to think what KFC employees on the mainland are capable of.

honestly if you asked me, i think its ok. its just a common perception that we have that rubbish bin = dirty.

just go around and ask those who have ever worked partime in kitchen, when doing closing, its a common sight that when we throw food, the whole rubbish bin is filled with freshly cooked white rice.

prehaps everyone recall their days in bmt tekong. during breakfast wasn't it a common sight that the whole rubbish bin is filled to the brim uniformly with bread?

so i will not be surprise if in this video, the whole bin at this moment is filled with fried items with some paper waste. honestly is it really that dirty?

of course if the bin is dirty, and food that are served that posed risk to others health, its really immoral for the person to do it.

I disagree with you. Simple bacteria may not be harmful to you but could kill a child easily.

bacteria? what bacteria ? its a kitchen, not a lab they do not culture or ferment E.coli there. unless you are talking about someone spilling into the bin etc, but most of the case you can reassure that during closing if you have the chance to take a peep into the kitchen, you will get a shock of your life. for those who never step inside a commercial kitchen before.

but the situation of wastage is beyond what you can imagine. i will use this case as an example. it might be as bad as the whole freash new trash bag is filled with fried chicken wings.

how dirty is that? that trash bag is as clean as your food container, if not cleaner. where is the source of bacteria? there is always 2 sides to a coin

Lets not argue here. A rubbish bin is a rubbish bin. Bacteria/ germs/toxins or whatever verments should not be around food.

This is a black and white clear cut case.

Please don't condone a silly action by this particular KFC.

What if this, what if that, too many what if. Just use it solely as a rubbish bin and you eliminate all the what ifs.

you have problem identifying there is no source of bacteria/germs/toxin from a clean trash bag filled with food?

It's hardly surprising. The Chinese have no scruples, no morals and no sense of shame.

Watch the video again. While she took out a piece of chicken, she dropped a white colour cup back into the trash bin. There is more than just fresh chicken pieces inside there.

i wonder why they have to throw all the leftovers at the same time.. could juz leave some and if no customers.. just let the staff take them home as incentives...

the amount of food wasted at fast food and bakery each day is sinful... sometimes when i pass by the back of kitchens.. can see the waste they throw out...

Beg to differ but there are kitches that have E coli culutures most likely unintentional, but it can make ppl who eat the food sick.

This is indeed shocking. Next time don't go to a restaurant at closing time.

The person who thinks is ok can eat all he wants from the garbage bin

Agree on the waste but it is difficult in the food business. You can't have empty trays or half empty trays. In the past, there used to be collection of good food at the end of a business day for delivery to welfare homes and charities. After a number of cases of food poisoning suffered, this has been stopped.

Letting staff take home food has its own challenges.

Don't make hasty generalisation please.

Human greed is universal, regardless of race (or ethnicity - a more sociological term which you usually prefer to use).

Agree with Sammy, the chinks really have no scruples about the well-being of other human beings, if they go down, they wanna bring others down with them.

The future is fucked if China is allowed to become a superpower nation.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/universal
1: including or covering all or a whole collectively or distributively without limit or exception

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/astronomical
2 : enormously or inconceivably large or great <astronomical numbers>

Something that is enormously large, is not as large as the one covering all. Right?
