KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Apr 5, 2018, 7:18 AM ET

Malaysian authorities ordered former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s political party to temporarily disband Thursday in a blow to the opposition ahead of expected general elections.

The Registrar of Societies said the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia failed to submit adequate documentation related to its registration and asked it to do so within a month or be permanently deregistered.

Elections are due by August but Prime Minister Najib Razak is widely expected to dissolve Parliament on Friday to pave the way for a vote next month. Support for Najib’s ruling coalition has dwindled in the last two elections and in 2013 it lost the popular vote for the first time.

Pribumi party official Wan Saiful Wan Jan called Thursday’s order “an abuse of power by a regime that is desperate to stay in office.”

He said the party was to meet later Thursday to decide its next move.

“We will continue to fight this abusive regime,” he said. “This action provides even stronger evidence that they must be removed if we want bring back integrity into our institutions.”

Najib has been engulfed in an international financial scandal involving the 1MBD state fund that he set up in 2009 and that went on to accumulate billions of dollars in debt. The U.S. and several other countries are investigating allegations of cross border embezzlement and money laundering at the fund.

The U.S. Justice Department says at least $4.5 billion was stolen from 1MDB by associates of Najib and it is working to seize $1.7 billion taken from the fund to buy assets in the U.S.

Najib, who denies any wrongdoing, has fired critics within the government and muzzled the media since the scandal erupted three years ago.

Analysts expect Najib to win a third term due to infighting in the opposition, unfavorable electoral boundary changes and strong support for the government from rural ethnic Malays.

Najib must have learned from Singapore.
Pinky disqualified all other candidates in the Presidential Election so Halimah got a walkover.

much better than a "blackout" by any measure :p:p:p

Mahathir's new m&d party is as unreliable as the WP. Both have trouble filling up their forms properly.

These words also familiar. Heard them somewhere before? Long live PAP

Both sinkieland and mudland are twins separated at birth. Might as well just merge the two countries.

"Mahathir Mohamad's political party provisionally dissolved" - Channel NewsAsia

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian opposition party formed by former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), has been provisionally dissolved by the Registrar of Societies over its alleged failure to provide necessary documents.

“We have been officially notified by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) that PPBM has been deregistered. The notification came just a few minutes ago,” a senior member of PPBM told Channel NewsAsia.

“The deregistration is effective as of now,” the PPBM member added.

Under the law, the ROS can issue a provisional order for the dissolution of a society if it fails to furnish required documents within a stipulated time. The society may cancel the order if the documents are submitted within 30 days.

The party has 30 days to appeal but polls are expected to be called any day now. In the meantime, this provisional dissolution means PPBM cannot use its name and logo or conduct any activities.

But opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan's Secretary-General Saifuddin Abdullah told the media that the presidential council had already decided to treat PPBM as if it was still an active party and will honour agreements made.

This means that PPBM candidates would still be contesting 52 parliamentary seats as individuals but under one of the other component party logos. The logo, speculated to be that of Anwar Ibrahim's Parti Keadilan Rakyat, will be used by all Pakatan parties and will be revealed on Friday night at a rally in Johor.

Meanwhile, Pakatan is unable to use its own coalition logo given its own registration as a formal coalition has yet to be approved.

PPBM Supreme Council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan called the deregistration order “an abuse of power by a regime that is desperate to stay in office”. “UMNO is clearly scared and they are doing everything they can to stop the rise of PPBM,” said Wan Saiful in a statement.

“We will continue to fight this abusive regime. This action provides an even stronger evidence that they must be removed if we want to bring back integrity into our institutions,” he added.

PPBM was officially launched in January 2017 after Dr Mahathir left the ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) party in 2016 over a corruption scandal involving the state-owned firm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Dr Mahathir had called on Prime Minister Najib Razak to step down to take responsibility over the scandal.

Aiyoh, don't be a retard lah ...if it is simply a filling form matter, easily resolve.

It is a matter of filling up forms.

If the WP had their forms properly filled, there's no way to find fault. If Mahathir submitted all the necessary documents, his party would have been threatened with closure yet again. This is not the first time his party has issues regarding their party documentation forms. This problem happened simply because the m&d oppie party was careless once and up till now, did not take the warnings seriously.

Hihihi. We are abang adik sia. Fix oppositions, fix together! Oppo song boh?

Its a coalition opposition. If one party deregistered, 3 more still availanble.out of 3, two are non racial, non religious. The other one is a islamic party PAS splinter group.
The de-registered party is a malay muslim party under dr m. Like umno. So it may work out that opposition are not dominated by any race or religion. Could be good for the country if they win,

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysian authorities ordered former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's political party to temporarily disband Thursday in a blow to the opposition ahead of an expected general election.

The Registrar of Societies said the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia failed to submit adequate documentation for its registration and asked it to do so within a month or be permanently deregistered.

Elections are due by August but Prime Minister Najib Razak is widely expected to dissolve Parliament on Friday to pave the way for a vote next month. Support for Najib's ruling coalition has dwindled in the last two elections, and in 2013 it lost the popular vote for the first time.

Mahathir, Asia's longest serving leader for 22 years when he retired in 2003, called Thursday's order "tyranny" and unconstitutional because the party had given all necessary documents to the registrar last week.
