SELANGOR, Malaysia - Drug smugglers are using ingenious ways to smuggle drugs into the country, the latest by hiding them inside keychains.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Customs director Badaruddin Mohamed Rafik said the department intercepted 2,496 keychains containing drugs.
The shipment arrived at the airport from Chennai on Oct 15.
The keychains, he said, had a slightly wide surface which the smugglers used to insert small plastic bags containing an average of 4gm of Amphetamine drugs.
"We received a tip-off that the shipment of keychains contained drugs," he told a press conference at the KLIA Customs department office yesterday.
Customs officers inspected the shipment on Oct 30 and found the drugs in the form of crystals hidden inside the keychains.
The total weight of the drugs was around 7.25kg with a street value of about RM725,000 (S$290,000).
