A little background of myself. I was a downgraded project clerk serving my NSF liabilities at Mindef Gombak Base HQ and that was how I got to know some state secrets held closely by the top brass. I reported directly to the then Chief of Army General Ng Yat Chung and several other SAFOS and PS scholars and I was secretariat to their closed door conferences. By now most of us including the Formation Commanders are in Mindef Reserve and most of the closely held decisions are declassified, so I have nothing to hide anymore.
Back then, the Army Board had some crucial decisions to make because Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Mr S R Nathan were aging and quite old, and General Ng Yat Chung was deciding what to do should Mr Lee and Mr Nathan pass away. He tasked me - I was 20 years old then - to show up at the state funeral wakes of the two Singaporean legends and tell the whole world that I loved Mr Lee and Mr Nathan. In exchange for my service and contribution, I was placed in Undeployable List, NSPC, and excused reservist for the rest of my life. I agreed.
So in the year 2015, I showed up at Teck Ghee CC where the Mediacorp press was gathered, and I accepted the television interview telling the world that I loved LKY. The interview was broadcast to the public on 22 March 2015. Similarly, in the year 2016, I showed up at the Istana main entrance, and told the world that I voted for President Nathan. Even though many people disagreed with me saying that Nathan's Presidency was a walkover and not an elected one, I followed my orders to the dot as General Ng Yat Chung was back then the Chief of Singapore Press Holdings and he controlled the state press. In other words, I covered his backside, he covered my backside, the show had to go on. So, it was decided by all political stakeholders that Mr Nathan's Presidency was a legitimate elected one, and my job which was to support the decision makers was deemed complete - even though people hated the guts out of me.
After my mission was complete, I was ordered by G1-Army to report to People's Action Party where I served the next eight years as a Social Media Online Influence, or what you guys call an Internet Brigade. My job was to support PAP's digital media operations on a daily basis and report any threats to the PAP's rule to the Party Whip - initially Minister Chan Chun Sing and now MoS Janil Puthucheary and indirectly Minister Josephine Teo.
As politics are not my cup of tea, I was excused by IMH from joining PAP as a party member but to serve on as a party volunteer. There's a difference: party members wear all white, party volunteers get paid some minimal allowances without having to wear the same all white uniform.
My unspoken job scope was also to support Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong until His retirement. In a few more days, the PAP annual meeting will be held, and that is when Mr Lee will relinquish His role as party secretary general to PM Lawrence Wong. My job is almost complete.
EDMW has served me well as there are plenty of intel that comes in and goes out of this platform, so as long as there are no objections, I am allowed to stay on here at HWZ as a low profile participant. I am a Zen Buddhist since young, so I'll spend more time in the next few months participating in Buddhist activities and helping SM LHL and PM LW earn brownie points and spiritual merits.
I feel very happy now that SM Lee is stepping down as party Sec Gen, it's been a difficult journey, and I count my blessings that I am finally reaching this milestone. Grateful to all my benefactors and debtors for helping to sustain me all these years.
Thank You SM LHL! May You live a ripe old age with Mdm Ho Ching, Your upcoming retirement as PAP Sec Gen is great news to my ears!
