Sears Announces Closures, JCP Says It’s ‘Going After’ Sears’ Appliances Business

It’s been a doubly rough week for Sears.

The struggling chain announced even more brick-and-mortar store closures are coming — this time to 103 Kmart and Sears locations.

Once the largest retailer in the U.S., Sears has cut its number of stores in half over the last several years. The last 12 months have been particularly brutal: Mounting debt and 24 straight quarters of losses have troubled efforts to stay afloat.

As of the end of October, Sears operated around 1,104 stores — about half of the 2,019 stores it possessed in 2012. This latest round of closures comes on top of the 63 stores Sears is closing this month and the 330 stores it shut down in 2017.

And, as they say, the hits just keep on coming: JCPenney CEO Marvin Ellison noted in an interview with Fortune this week that part of his also-struggling (but less struggling) department store chain’s comeback is predicated on yet more suffering for Sears.

“We’re going after Sears, and we’re going after market share that we think is going to be available not only now but as they continue to contract,” Ellison said.

JCPenney started selling home appliances two years ago after a 30-year hiatus. The retailer has managed to use that — and some other innovations, like Sephora mini-stores — to help the firm to a better-than-expected 3.4 percent growth rate during the holiday season in 2017.

Ellison has noted that Sears’ recent troubles have meant that JCPenney needs to be ready to conquer the market. The retailer added showrooms for its mattresses at some 500 stores and expanded its home goods category in an attempt to limit its exposure to the flagging apparel space.

“Our appliance initiative, our furniture, our mattress is a way to plant a flag now in the expectation we’ll be able to gain more share in the near future,” Ellison stated.

An additional 103 Sears and KMart stores will close in the next several months, Sears Holdings announced Thursday.

Among the locations set to go out of business is the Sears on Hooper Avenue in Toms River. That store will close in early April. The Sears Auto Center there will shutter its doors in late January.

Sears Holdings said 64 Kmart and 39 Sears stores are slated to close between early March and early April.

Eligible employees will receive severance and all employees can apply for openings at other stores. The affected locations plan to begin clearance sales as early as Jan. 12. Sears didn't say how many workers would lose their jobs.

Retail collapse: The 35 biggest chains closing stores this year

Check out our list of the retail chains closing stores in 2017.

In November, the company announced the Sears in the Phillipsburg Mall will close by the end of January.

In August, Sears Holdings said Kmart stores on Route 38 in Moorestown and Route 46 in Parsippany would close by mid-November.

Sears Holdings closed about 250 stores last year and is down to less than 1,250 nationwide. In 2006, there were more than 3,400.

In March, the company said there was "substantial doubt" about whether it could stay in business.

With online shopping growing ever more popular, it’s no surprise that retail stores and malls have struggled to stay afloat. In fact, a staple from our childhoods, Sears, just announced they’re closing a ton of stores in 2018, and our hearts are definitely breaking a little.

Few things have taken as big a hit from the online shopping boom as the mall, and 2017 brought a slew of mall store closures. With so many of our favorite stores shutting their doors— from Teavana, which closed all stores last year, to Bebe, which moved all business online, to BCBG and The Limited — it certainly feels like the death of retail as we knew it is imminent…but that doesn’t make it any easier for our mall-loving hearts to handle.

And department stores aren’t faring much better, with J.C. Penney shuttering hundreds of stores and Macy’s doing the same, it seems Sears is just the latest retail giant to follow suit.

Sears Holdings Corp. just announced they’re preparing to close more than 100 stores on top of the 250 previously announced, including 64 Kmart stores and 39 Sears stores that will close by early spring.

Apparently, the closures were a long time in the making, with the company not having reported profits since 2010. Still, that doesn’t make it hurt any less, since it seems that in the coming decade, the mall as we know it will cease to exist altogether — costing so very many people their jobs.

We wish the best for all impacted employees, and we’re going to go ahead and pour one out for our favorite place to get appliances and affordable apparel.

More new slave jobs, delivery drivers, for ah nehs in US.

Or ah nehs can join US army like their forefathers did in BE time.

This will happen in sg in a few years time. It will be a big issue for sg because property price will be affected and property is the only thing the govt knows how to make and sell.

You under estimate the PAP.

There are too many Malls in Spore. The price of older condos are not what they used to be. I think a glut still exists because the PAP built with expectation of a Spore population of 10 million.

Brick and mortars can easily beat the online trders as they already have the stores and warehouses. All they need is a website and logistics like dhl.
Currently, amazon realised this and opening their own stores.
