JTC to built Jurong Rock Cavern to start construction by year end
Construction of the Jurong Rock Cavern will finally begin by year end at a cost of some $890 million.
It's the first underground oil storage facility in Singapore and Southeast Asia,
Industrial landlord, JTC Corp, has awarded the first phase construction contract to Korean firm Hyundai Engineering and Construction.
The first two caverns will be completed by 2013.
There're five caverns planned.
Each storage gallery is large enough to contain water from more than 64 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
It will be able to hold close to 1.5 million cube metres of oil underground.
