Johor to take over Singapore’s PUB assets when water deal ends
NUSAJAYA, Dec 10 — Johor will take over water-treatment assets, which are now managed by Singapore’s PUB, when a bilateral water agreement ends in 2011, Mentri Besar Datuk Ghani Othman told the state assembly on Tuesday.
The assets are used to treat water in Sungai Skudai, Sungai Tebrau and Gunung Pulai, Utusan Malaysia newspaper quoted the MB as telling the Johor state assembly.
Ghani said that when the agreement — signed in 1962 — ends there will not be buying and selling of water any more between Johor and Singapore.
But he declined to talk further about it as he was worried that the matter would be played up by the foreign media, the newspaper reported yesterday.
“What I can tell the sitting of the State Assembly is the state will take over the assets which are managed by PUB (under the 1961 Agreement).
“When the agreement ends, that is the end of sale and purchase transaction between Johor and Singapore from the water treatment plants of Sungai Skudai, Sungai Tebrau and Gunung Pulai,” he said.
Johor will then evaluate the worth of these assets at the end of the September 2011 deal, The Star newspaper quoted him as saying.
