PONTIAN (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - The two land border crossings with Singapore should be reopened as soon as possible, as the Johor state government is not capable of finding employment for 100,000 Malaysians who may lose their jobs due to the prolonged closure, said Menteri Besar Hasni Mohammad.

Datuk Hasni said that the current unemployment rate in the state was already at a record high of 18 per cent with 35,000 people jobless.

"The time has come for the Federal Government to find a way to balance the people's lives and their livelihoods, as we do not want the scale to tip only towards lives due to the Covid-19 pandemic," he said.

Mr Hasni said 5 to 10 per cent of businesses in the city area had closed as a result of cash flow issues since the border closure in March.

He noted that the economy of Johor, which previously had some 250,000 people commuting daily between both countries to earn their keep, had been hard hit.

"Johor's trade, among the highest in the country for five years since 2013, has also been badly affected.

"Some 100,000 Malaysians may lose their jobs if the closure is prolonged," he said.

Mr Hasni said as the Menteri Besar, he was in touch with Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to find a way to keep the Covid-19 situation under control while moving to fully reopen the border.

He also said it was an opportune time for the border to be reopened for daily commute, as Johor has been a green zone for some time.

"Let's start with students and then gradually move to workers," he said when asked to comment on The Star's front-page report on pleas from various quarters to reopen the border with Singapore to spur economic activities, especially in the city area.

Since border movements were curtailed in March, many businesses have been suffering, with some seeing up to a 70 per cent decline without the patronage of Singaporeans.

Asked about the move by Singapore to slowly lift restrictions on Malaysians since Sept 1, which included reducing quarantine time to only seven days, Mr Hasni said: "The Malaysian side should always reciprocate and coordinate the SOP with its Singaporean counterpart, as I believe the health departments of both countries are constantly in touch."

He pointed out that just as Johor's economy was worsening, Singapore was also experiencing its worst-ever economic contraction in 55 years.

State Health and Environment Committee chairman R. Vidyananthan also felt it was time for the Malaysia-Singapore land border to reopen in stages.

"We feel that blanket SOP cannot be applied here; Johor and Singapore should follow a different criterion.

"The Johor government has given our suggestions on the SOP to the Federal Government and hope it will be taken into consideration and implemented soon for economic considerations.

"Besides, Johor has been a green zone for more than a month since the RGL (Reciprocal Green Lane) and PCA (Periodic Commuting Arrangement) started with Singapore, " he said.

He added that more than 5,542 people had travelled using the two arrangements since Aug 17.

Every jiuhukia and m&d knows that. But they are too proud to admit it. The m&d menteri besar, appointed as MB only because he is m&d moslem, is now in desperate straits to admit this basic truth. Jiuhu needs PAP Singapore more than we need them.

JB is like a low end suburb. Obviously there would be workers from those areas.

Plus that explains the fall in population as hundreds of thousands from jb can't get to work.

JB development is messy. There are high rise hotels amongst single storey residential areas, plots of developments surrounded by abandoned plots of land overrun with weeds and swamps. It is obvious that the jiuhukias have no clue how to develop a decent town.

Actually those abandoned developments were planned during badawi's time.he made jb boom. How? By making it easy for sinkies to enter and those china and india tourist day trippers were allowed to enter visa free mostly from sinkie to visit theme parks.
Najib came in and cancelled everything. Chinese and india visitors needed visa with hefty processing fee.and jams started building up at the causeway causing sinkies to give up living in jb.
Dr m made it worse by insisting China developers build affordable homes.
Today, the the me parks are closed, no tourists from china and india visit jb anymore snd the development by China developers looks like it's failing.

It's a fact that if jiuhu was governed by the jiuhu chinks, the jiuhu economy would take off by leaps and bounds. But it will offend the bumi moslem pride that the non-moslems can govern the country well while the moslems turn their own states into failed states. Just look at Penang vs Kelantan.

The Royal Sultan, especially the son, not suprisingly, has gone all quiet.
Before that it was pushing for an implied Johor secession. Their joint
projects with Chinese developers failed, as with Peter Lim's. They have
no business sense.

The sultan has business sense. It's the politicians that curtailed his projects. Dr m wanted forest city to build affordable homes can you imagine.and sell it to the poor bumis. Its this silly policy changes that fail the country. Affordable homes should be built by the gomen and not private developers.

Lim guan eng was finance minister and DAP deny funds to their ally in sabah state when in power. just heard they lost the election and its gone back to umno and BN.
Lim guan eng even tell sarawak people to fund their own schools.
It just show how silly some people in power can be.

I'm expecting to see sabah and sarawak go their own way and leave jiuhu within our lifetime. Jiuhu peninsular wants to be a failed theocracy because their leaders think its good for their political interests and some retards actually believe a failed theocracy is a ticket to heaven.

They will be better off being independent.their economy together with brunei are compatible. Basically oil and gas, palm oil, timber, shipbuilding( biggest yard capable of building biggest ship in the country is in labuan). Even worse, they are penalise for dr m's national car policy.when they get zero benefit from it, but must pay high import taxes. Brunei people are laughing.at the cost of new cars in sarawak.

Many abandoned malls as well. A perfect eyesore!

what a hogwash ,if not bullshit

out of the mostly half a million malaysians who commute to and fro JB singapore ,at least 80%are not johoreans..that's a fact ,most of these folks live in crowded rented rooms ..
and almost all Indians who come here are from Perak ..the mention of Perak Indians is associated with crime and drugs, in fact 80% of Malaysian jails are occupied by them ...there are certain areas in JB you would find concentration of these folks along racial line ...only Malays who work here are mostly from JB ,otherwise from Kelantan

in fact these people are the major reason why the crime rate shot up in JB ..not to mention locals hate their presence

Both sides needs each other just that Malaysian govt especially during mahathir time love to use Singapore as a whipping boy. This pisses off Singaporeans
