Introducing the final member of the Jewel Facets Photo Contest 2021 judging panel – Charu Kokate!
Widely known for designing many ground-breaking buildings worldwide, Safdie Architects has designed many iconic commercial and residential developments in Singapore such as Marina Bay Sands and Jewel Changi Airport. Charu is a Partner at Safdie Architects, and she was one of the key leaders who headed the design and construction of Jewel. As a design guardian, she strongly believes that successful buildings are the ones where the visitor experiences emotions for which the building was designed for. “At Jewel Changi Airport, our role was of a conductor, for a project, whose scale and complexity presented great challenges but allowed us to implement ideas that had never been tried before.”
Some of her favourite spots to take photos at Jewel include the East and West trails at the Shiseido Forest Valley as the scenery changes at every turn along the winding path.
“This is a picture I took one evening just before sunset during the construction of Jewel. As the dust was settling, golden sunrays came filtering through the roof like blessings from the sky. It was a magical moment. Very beautiful and spiritual.”
<Tips!> For all participants of the Jewel Facets photo contest, Charu has some tips for you! “Try experimenting in different lighting conditions. The Shiseido Forest Valley has amazing day light filtering through the HSBC Rain Vortex and plants, creating interesting effects!”
