are the whaling fleet towns in the tsunami zone? by allocating $$ to the whaling fleet, it enable the fleet to hire crew and service the ships for the whaling season. An indirect way to give $$ to the towns affected by the tsunami. With the earning from whaling, the town also earn an income to rebulid the town. It a win win situation but it look bad in PR sense.

Fisheries Agency official Tatsuya Nakaoku said the extra security was designed to ensure safer hunts, and ultimately help coastal towns that are largely rely on whaling as they recover from the March 11 disasters.

"The government will support the reconstruction effort of a whaling town and nearby areas," he told AFP on Wednesday.

"This program can help it reconstruct food-processing plants there... Many people in the area eat whale meat, too.

jap whaling fleet normally operate in south pacific and antarctica ocean. those animal lovers always wait for the whaling fleet at australia or new zealand before setting off to disturb the whaling operation.

while i like to watch animal documentaries, i dun approve of what these so call whale lovers are doing. They are no better than pirates by attacking the whaling fleet with paint guns and eggs to disturb jap ship deck operations. then if the jap ship touch these "terrorist" ship, then they will scream to the world that the jap ram their ship.

Yes , I already knew those animals activist are insane ..most of them pocketed the funds donated by animals lover too . My business in japan involving pets but i too don't approve of their behavior . there's tons of crime reported at those animal activists too ...especially animal's shelter .
