The JAPANESE spent their money WISELY and CORRECTLY.

In S'pore, money is ALWAYS spent in a manner where "it is seen to be of cosmetic use". In other words, money is spent to "SHOW" that something is done; but not necessary to solve the problem.

In other words, mostly for POLITICAL mileage and little else.

And also served as an earthquake and tsunami shelters as Japan is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis every year? Our underground stations in Orchard Road and City Hall were equally successfully in preventing floods even though surface roads were flooded.

That amount of space and money is worth the while for thousands or even millions of people. Is it affordable for Singapore to build one?

GMS is just trying to prove that LKY is infallible - nothing more. It appears that he will go to heaven and hell to search for one.

Well, GMS should have done more research and ask LTA to consider this (not much of an effort - simply a click) - if he is willing to throw that kind of taxpayers' money. May be he will raise the GST or increase taxes to do so.

How much is the Espanade making?

Based on the Income & Expenditure Statement ended 31 Mar 2009, it made a deficit before grants of $38m. Deficit before grants in FY2008 and FY2007 was $34m and $33m respectively.

Grants and rental subvention in FY2009 amounted to $40m.

Rental subvention was definitely funded by the govt as stated. While not very explicitly stated in the Notes to the Accounts, I guess grants came from the government as well.
