We have to thank the Japanese for their fine taste and intelligence. Japan no doubt will only benefit from their wise decision to turn their backs on the PRCs.

Last time I went to Japan I was ASTOUNDED how all the Japanese people DID NOT jump off the plane when the seat belt sign was turned off! They are literally the only people who actually listen to the announcements and don't move. No one else does that! And when the train was 2 minutes late they apologized! Said it wont happened again! These people have class.

As for Southern Chinese being sinicized, it's true. Southern extremities of China were not 100% Chinese. But that was far earlier in the game. They became sinicized. And this is the gene pool / people that sinkieland comes from. But they were not Mongolized genetically nor culturally as Northern and plains China was. As to your argument that Mongolians got assimilated, that's true too, but genetically they still retain unique markers that distinguish themselves as Mongolians and not Han Chinese. So if you will, they became chopstick using Mongols. If that alone qualifies, then why not Middle Easterners who speak Chinese and follow Chinese culture?

actually that's inaccurate.

I reproduce a table here and as you can see clearly, the closest "dialect" to Middle Chinese that was used in Chang'An in the Sui and Tang dynasties is Hokkien. Going from this, a person speaking Hokkien would be able to understand Middle Chinese 1-10 quite well and Japanese as well. A Cantonese speaker on the other hand would be able to understand a Vietnamese quite well.

Historically, the Yue are actually people living south of the Anling mountains conquered by the Han Chinese. They are not native Chinese at all, but more like Indo-Chinese. Modern day Vietnamese or Lao people would be a closer fit than actual Chinese.

Thank you for the contribution. I'm not familiar with Hakka at all, but the Hakka are Han Chinese who ran south to get away from the barbarian invaders -- Mongols and Jurchens. As a Hokkien speaker the far right column sounds like Hokkien. Actually there's a lot of depth to explore in this subject. The gist of it is that a lot of the Southern "dialects" are derived from the middle chinese used in Chang'An. This middle Chinese was dispaced in Mongol occupied areas with a precursor to modern Mandarin.
