And why Chinese be happy if Japan fight with China again. Okinawa Ryuku Hokkaido will be free. And Japan emporer be made custodian of public toilet build where Yasukuni shrine razed

What has non Taiwanese got to do with fate of taiwan? Future of taiwan only taiwanese can decided. They have seen how Hong Kong was decapitated. No more freedom of speech. No more cat III movies. Taiwanese prefer Japanese rule if not independence.

These are very wise words by Mahbubani.

He's saying that Taiwan already has de facto independence, their passport is recognised by 150+ nations, they can trade with any nation in the world, their people enjoy a level of freedom unparalleled in Asia, they have powerhouse industries. If you declare independence, you're locked in a prison: no country will recognise you (if they have to choose between China & Taiwan), your people won't be able to travel anywhere, your trading relations will be limited to a few countries, your industries will collapse, and worst of all... there may be a war which you'll probably lose. What do you gain? You get to call yourself the Independent Republic of Taiwan. That's all.

The choice is obvious, isn't it, from an outsider's point of view.
