LONDON (AFP) - Over 50 years of cinematic success, James Bond has exercised his masculine charms on a string of women, although the role of the "Bond Girls" has subtly evolved over the years.

Bond author Ian Fleming gave the early women characters pastiche names - Pussy Galore (Goldfinger), Tiffany Case (Diamonds Are Forever) and Mary Goodnight (The Man With The Golden Gun).

"Maybe that's an indication that we are not meant to take those characters seriously," said James Chapman, historian at Leicester University in England and author of Licence To Thrill: A Cultural History Of The James Bond Films.

But the women playing opposite Bond have evolved with the times, he noted.

Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder in 'Dr. No,' 1962

James Bond has been snagging gorgeous women for half a century! It's been 50 years since 007 first sidled up to Honey Ryder on the beach in the 1962 film, "Dr. No." Considered the original Bond girl, Honey Ryder (played by Ursula Andress) set the pace for Bond's female companions to come when she infamously emerged from the crystal Crab Key waters in her cream-colored bikini. But while she may have been the first of Bond's beautiful women, she certainly wasn't the last. From Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore to Halle Berry as Jinx, check out the long list of ladies in 007's life.

The best Bond was Sean Connery of course, but others have their favorites: Roger Moore, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig or even David Niven. Yes, Niven played Bond in 1967. He was chosen to play in the spoof of “Casino Royale”.

Which ever Bond actors or movies you liked best, one thing is certain. James Bond has been part of pop culture in the States and across the pond for over 60 years. And the Bond legacy continues. On November 9th, 2012, Skyfall, the 23rd Bond film in the franchise will be released in the US. Skyfall will be the third film to star Daniel Craig as 007 and the first Bond film released in IMAX.

My choice Bond girl is Mariam d Abo

Of all the actors that came after Sean Connery I personally thought Timothy Dalton was closer to the original bond.
Roger Moore was still very much Simon Templer, Brosnan was more like a street detective and Craig is very much like a ex-SAS.

simon templar...the saint. Nice show. Used to like watching.

A requisite key feature of all of the James Bond films has been the inclusion of one or more Bond girls, serving as sex objects and often as major characters opposite agent 007. The larger-than-life females usually became Bond's love interest (often reluctantly but then enthusiastically), although there were some exceptions.

A few of the Bond girls were actually "Villains & femme fatales" (although some switched allegiances), indicated in the description as "The Best/Worst".

Although Miss Moneypenny, MI6's secretary, was not really a Bond girl, she was a Bond regular who appeared as a flirtatious, unrequited love-interest character in the first 20 official Bond films, portrayed by three different actresses (Lois Maxwell, Caroline Bliss, and Samantha Bond).
