A MYANMAR national who caused the death of a motorcyclist by doing a rash act was jailed for eight months and banned from driving for eight years on Wednesday.
Zaw Myint Tun, 40, a road inspector, admitted to causing the death of Mr Vikneshvaran Samugam, 25, along Pan-Island Expressway on Sept 30, 2006.
He was given a concurrent sentence of five months and banned from driving for six years for drink driving. His alcoholic breath was 79mcg per 100ml of breath, which was more than twice the legal limit.
The court heard that Zaw had some drinks at a coffeeshop near Bedok Reservoir before taking to the road that evening. He was seen driving his lorry unsteadily and snaking back and forth between lanes before colliding into the rider, who was flung off the machine the second time he was hit by Zaw's vehicle.
Zaw could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death.
The penalty for drink driving is a fine of up to $5,000 and/or a jail term of up to six months.
