Brazil: More than 60,000 people died of Covid-19 in March

Relatives of a coronavirus victim mourn as their loved one is buried at the Vila Formosa cemetery in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on March 31, 2021

Brazil has the suffered the second highest death toll from Covid-19 in the world
Some 66,570 people in Brazil died of Covid-19 in March, more than double the previous monthly record, figures show.
The country's health service has been pushed to the brink as cases of the virus continue to climb.
President Jair Bolsonaro has faced intense criticism for his handling of the crisis and was hit by high-profile resignations this week.

But on Wednesday he again railed against lockdown measures imposed by local governors and mayors.
"We had, and we have, two enemies - the virus and unemployment! It is a reality! We are not going to solve this problem by staying at home," he said.
Wednesday also saw a further 3,800 new deaths and over 90,000 new coronavirus cases. Brazil's daily deaths currently account for about a quarter of all coronavirus fatalities in the world.
New chiefs of the army, navy and air force were announced on Wednesday to replace those who resigned on Tuesday in an apparent protest at the sudden sacking of Defence Minister Fernando Azevedo e Silva.
Mr Bolsonaro and his minister had clashed over the issue of the armed forces' loyalty, which the defence minister said should be directed to upholding the constitution rather than supporting the president personally.
The role of the armed forces in Brazilian politics has been a sensitive issue since the country's return to democracy in 1985 after 21 years of military rule.
The new defence minister, Walter Braga Netto, announced that Paulo Sérgio Nogueira de Oliveira would head up the army, Almir Garnier the navy and Carlos Almeida Baptista Júnior the air force.
His announcement came on the anniversary of the 1964 coup that brought the military to power.
He said the military would "not be found wanting when the country needs it".

1.5 MILLION Brazilians die every year from all causes so what is your point? That only Covid related deaths matter?

‘Double mutant’ strain tips daily cases in India past 100,000
India's daily virus cases breach 100,000

Crowds continue to gather as infections surge
Politicians are still holding election rallies in different states attended by tens of thousands of people packed in and maskless.
The “double mutant” variant has been detected in more than 200 cases in one of the hardest hit states, Maharashtra in western India.
A throng of people pictured on a beach in the Maharashtran capital of Mumbai last weekend showed little to no social distancing.
Other images from Mumbai show crowds of locals packed into a huge food market.
India’s two approved vaccines, AstraZeneca and Covaxin, which was developed in Hyderabad’s Bharat Biotech laboratory, are effective against mutant variants from the UK and Brazil.
However health officials said the term “double mutant” referred to an entirely new variant that has the characteristics of two already identified strains.
India is ramping up its vaccination program in response to the rising infection numbers. Almost 80 million people have so far been immunised.

People not following ‘COVID-appropriate behaviour’
The extraordinary new surge led to Prime Minister Narendra Modi holding a high-level meeting of his pandemic team.
Dr Randeep Guleria of India’s pandemic task force said the new infectious virus variants combined with “the lack of appropriate COVID-19 behaviour, of not wearing masks, or keeping social distancing … is the cause of this sharp spike”.
Mr Modi tweeted he “reiterated the importance of the five-fold strategy of testing, tracing, treatment, COVID-appropriate behaviour, and vaccination as an effective way to fight the global pandemic”.
Scientists in Maharashtra are now working to see how the double strain may be more resistant to vaccines.
On Sunday, the state, which has a population of around 123 million, recorded its highest single daily case number of 57,704.
Authorities have now imposed restrictions until the end of the month, including a weekday curfew between 8pm and 7am and a complete weekend lockdown.
Schools, colleges, educational institutions, malls, spas, gymnasiums and restaurants will remain closed.

I would agree with you except the costs of getting this wrong would be catastrophic. America is a continent away and angmors there have different immunity than the rest of the world.

I'm sure 300 years ago Pocahontas' cousins made similar assumptions and used the blankets donated by Paleface and we all know what happened next
