Usually around CNY Spore is quiet because Malaysians & other foreigners go back to their kampongs. Sporeans also take the opportunity to clear their leave & travel.

This year the trains are still as crowded as ever.

How come this year no one's seems to be going anywhere

For the past years, it's CNY.
In the future years, it's Deepavali. :D

global economic meltdowns?

budget cuts and increasing unemployment?

fear of bad times ahead?

B'cos the foreigners bought flats and their families come and visit them. And then they all go RWS.

Cheers!

If all the bad things were true then there would be fewer people around. The trains would also be emptier as people wouldn't have any reason to travel

I just went out today & didn't see any difference at all. Same crowded trains,

Yes but isn't it customary to balek kampong to see the families(plural)? Chinese have large extended families so I don't think its practical to have the clan visit Spore.

Just imagine, some of these foreigners are packed like sardines in HDB units. I doubt they have room for visiting relatives.

For Malaysians it isn't expensive to go back to their kampongs.

RWS is a funny place for families to spend their holidays. There are age restrictions & if I remember Sentosa is an expensive place to visit.

Perhaps the case is that initially when there were a certain number of PRs, they did go back to their home countries on such festive period like CNY.

Now, probably even their families, extended families, every Tom, Dick, Harry also all get PR and are staying here?

Hence you don't see the crowds thinning out this festive season.

No $$$$$$$$$$ No CNY travel OK?

You right. No money how to celebrate CNY ?
All costing money. Travel, ang pow, parent money, gathering with friend. Many chose not going back.

You're right, things are really different than 10 or 20 years ago.
Nowadays there are many people (Chinese) who don't celebrate CNY or celebrate in a small way. Some can't afford to celebrate.
The other races still go about their normal business during CNY. There are also many foreigners around who either don't celebrate or don't even know that it's CNY. There are also many china nationals who haven't gone back to china for their personal reasons.

I notice that the spirit isn't there anymore but I thought in my case it's because my friends & relatives have left. Spore
