Is the old Singapore better than the new Singapore.

This study, the “CIMB Singapore: Attitudes and Beliefs towards Financial Independence Report 2025”, was done in collaboration with the Nanyang Centre for Marketing and Technology.

The study drew insights from over 500 Singapore residents aged 26-60 on their perspectives towards financial independence and retirement planning last December.

As indicated in the survey, 63% of the respondents aspire to achieve financial independence between 40 to 60 years old.

The goal of at least $1 million might seem big but 72% of Singapore residents believe this is a realistic goal, with 43% of them confident of their managing their finances to achieve financial independence.

Meanwhile, there are some speed bumps. According to the CIMB survey, the top three barriers to financial independence cited are the high cost of living, family responsibilities, followed by low income.

On the other hand, 39% of respondents believe that they are “often” or “always” feeling anxious about their financial future.

Specifically, those aged 40-50 have higher financial anxiety, with 47% of them claiming that they feel "often" or "always" anxious.

According to CIMB, which has a regional footprint, similar sentiments are echoed in other urban cities with strong economies such as Hong Kong, where 28% of their workers reported that their financial situation is causing them higher levels of stress and anxiety.

Out of 71% of respondents with financial plans, only 48% have started planning for their retirement, citing reasons such as prioritising other financial obligations, reliance on CPF, and lack of knowledge as challenges impeding their retirement planning.

Raymond Tan, Head of Wealth Management and Preferred Banking at CIMB Singapore, says that the bank is "privileged" to collaborate with the Nanyang Centre for Marketing and Technology on this study, which revealed key insights into Singapore residents’ attitudes and beliefs towards financial independence.

"Notably, younger Singapore residents show the most confidence in achieving early financial independence compared to other age groups.

"We recognise that the journey to financial independence is deeply personal and are dedicated to supporting all generations to help them navigate their unique financial journeys,” says Tan.

This collaboration highlights the strength of academia-industry partnerships in translating rigorous academic research into actionable insights for the business world," says Professor Sharon Ng, Deputy Dean at Nanyang Business School and Director at the Nanyang Centre for Marketing and Technology, says the school is

"We believe this initiative will serve as a strong foundation for future collaborations, contributing to the development of a dynamic and mutually beneficial ecosystem,” she adds.

According to CIMB, a growing number of younger Singapore residents are aiming for early financial independence and that they demonstrate strong confidence in achieving their goals.

Of the respondents under the age of 30, 60% aim to achieve financial independence before the age of 40, and 54% expressed confidence in their financial management skills.

Buyers undeterred by Aurelle of Tampines EC launch price

This could also bode well for upcoming executive condominium projects.

The remaining units in Aurelle of Tampines EC were snapped up by buyers despite setting a new benchmark launch price for executive condominiums (ECs) at over $1,700 psf on average, PropNex said.

This renders the 760-unit EC project fully sold since the project’s initial launch in March. During its initial launch, the project sold 682 units, reflecting 90% of its inventory.

Ismail Gafoor, CEO of PropNex Realty, said that given that the 30% second-timer buyer quota at the initial launch weekend was quickly met, the robust take-up at the second-timers’ sales booking was expected.

Aurelle of Tampines is the first EC project to be completely sold out during its second-timer booking since Copen Grand’s second-timer booking in November 2022.

PropNex believes that Aurelle of Tampines EC performed well due to the dwindling inventory of unsold ECs, along with its positive locational attributes.

Aurelle of Tampines’ performance also bodes well for the upcoming EC project, Otto Place at Plantation Close, due to the limited unsold new EC units in the market.

According to sales data from the PropNex sales team, there are fewer than 70 unsold EC units left on the market after accounting for today’s second-timer booking for Aurelle of Tampines.

Mark Yip, CEO of Huttons Asia, said that Aurelle of Tampines stands out as the second EC to be next to a fully integrated mixed-use development. This offers residents unparalleled convenience at a very attractive price.

It also shows that there is a very strong pool of upgrading demand in Tampines.

Huttons Asia said that an estimated 77% of buyers chose the deferred payment scheme. This is slightly higher than the estimated 70% during the initial launch in March 2025.

LKY introduced money politics into the PAP. From 1955 to 1973, the PM's salary was $3,500 per month. A significant salary revision in 1973 increased the PM's pay rise to $9,500 monthly, and other ministers' salaries from $4,500 to $7,000. In 2016 values, these amounts were equivalent to approximately $27,742 (annual $360,646, including 13th month) and $20,441 (annual $265,733, including 13th month) respectively. Then PM LKY stated that ministerial salaries needed to be competitive with private sector earnings. He reiterated this point in 1994, stating that future politicians would be motivated by $$$. LKY was 100% correct.
But did Old Fart Lee keep his salalee at $9,500 or $3,500.

LKY and his son LHL have long treated S'pore as their personal property, even though S'pore is merely a small nation. Most of the positions of power not held by LHL are held by his relatives, starting with his wife Ho Ching, whose remuneration has remained undisclosed. It is common knowledge that it runs undoubtedly into hundreds of million of dollars from taxpayers.

School for me was the place where my teachers gave me a better home, understanding, inspiration and guidance. They offered me what a limited home environment could not afford. Throughout the years I've worked at different schools trying to do my best to help the students believe they can succeed. I've always held my head up high because I followed in my former teacher's footsteps and became one. I always try to do for my students what my old teachers did for me.

I'm Australian & I remember a teacher who pulled me aside & asked me what was wrong? Why I wasn't coming to school.....she then asked me what I wanted to become. I told her I wanted to become a teacher just like she was. She said she believed me & said I could achieve it! - Four years later, after many hours of hard work - I am in my last year & will graduate as a teacher. Thank you Ms Hufton wherever you are! :) There are good teachers all over the world!
