JAKARTA (AP) - Indonesian scientists are closely monitoring a smoking volcano popular with tourists on Java island and are urging everyone to stay off the mountain's slope.

Government volcanologist Hendra Gunawan said on Thursday that Mount Tangkuban Perahu in West Java province has spewed smoke and ash nearly 500 meters into the air since Monday. Scientists have put it on the second-highest alert level.

Debris and lava have not tumbled far, and nearby towns and villages remain safe. Authorities are warning tourists to stay at least 1.5 km away from the crater because of the poisonous gas inside.

The 2,084-m volcano is among Java's most popular tourist attractions. It last erupted in 1983. Visitors ordinarily can hike to the crater's edge to view boiling m&d up close.

hi there

1. what's there to worry.
2. the worst case scenario.
3. sentosa cove to take the hardest hit loh:D
4. they can afford some tsunami mah:p

I thought this thread was about the big one, where people can finally bring out the champagne bottles & get that extra holiday(s) :)

The big one is Lake Toba's dormant volcano, located in Sumatra and not far away from Singapore.

When supervolcanoes erupt, they kill you slowly.

The smoke and ash blocks off the sunlight, and plants and crops die. Everyone eventually starves to death.

Try eating your overpriced, record-breaking HDB flats then. ;)

yellowstone is bigger than toba no?

in terms of tonnage of volcanic debris spewed, toba overwhelms yellowstone. both blew up before.

nz has one giant super volcano too. half of north island. i fear for sam's life. :o :p

........ Mount Tangkuban Perahu in West Java province .......

the biggest active one is actually quite near this....Mt Krakatoa last big eruption was 1883 and was felt in Sg and the explosions were heard in Perth and Mauritius. Smoke and haze lasted 6 months....its has a big eruption every 200 years or so.....so I think our life time may be ok

2083... think most of us are gone by then :o:o:o

The whole of Singapore can be contained inside the crater of Toba. I only hope that if there is an eruption, it will not be during our SW monsoon season.
